Janis

I just watched (again) the documentary "Janis" on the Sundance channel. Some great live performance footage! I saw her live at Madison Square Garden shortly before she died. A guy in the audience grabbed her by the ankle and tried to pull her off the stage and the band had to pull her back. It was quite a tug-of-war there for awhile.

I recently bought DVD box set The Dick Cavett Show: Rock Icons. One of the three disks is three complete shows on which Janis was a guest. (She did two numbers each appearance.) Enjoyed those shows. Few barbs shot between Janis and other guests Raquel Welch and Gloria Swanson. I think Janis might have mentioned that "ankle pulling" thing you described. Have ordered the book "Love, Janis", a biography by her sister Laura Joplin. She died way too young. What would she be doing today?

What would she be doing today? Unless she took at least a year off and found a good specialist and (my fingers tremble at typing this, but I mean it well) a voice teacher or vocal coach, she wouldn't be singing. Unless she was prepared to do some serious work on her voice, I think we probably heard her at her best and that it wouldn't have been much longer before she would have developed some real problems that would have been nearly impossible to recover from.

Bummer.

However, as friends used to sing to me, "Ev'ry party has a pooper, that's why we invited you."

Janis may have been in decline from birth, I don't think many have seen or heard a top notch Janis Joplin.
There may not even have been one.
She was amazing, but not as amazing as she could have been,

The brightest flame burns so briefly...
I saw heard her rock the house one last time in Gregory Gymnasium on campus, with me and good friend Kindly Kay Morris standing on metal folding chairs (never easy, even when straight), screaming our lungs out, for "Try", and all the others on that last tour. She was hitting the Southern Comfort too much, and the world loved her too little. She is the Grail, and the lead singer for my all time "Died Too Young" Band. ;-) GB
