A lot of cycle blogs have picked up on this. Apparently, Secretary LaHood is a cyclist and feels that Federal highway money should be inclusive of cycling and walking. I sure hope he can push this through. Might even lessen the need for the healthcare reform bill.
In Seattle, the city and the bicycling community worked for a couple of years on a plan to consider pedestrians and cyclists for planned routes through downtown. That is a very bicycle friendly city as opposed to Miami.
You have to watch the cyclists in Seattle not all are very bright, some ride in the early morning fog in dark clothing with no lights on some major streets. Of course you can't say much for the drivers up there either
Unfortunately, it appears that this is yet ANOTHER topic which will degenerate into political name calling.

What a shame that this was met with laughter. I'd like to see the cholesterol, resting heart rate and blood sugar levels of those laughing.
Traveling to Seattle, I was impressed then with the amount of cyclists out on the roads, ad we're talking over 20 years ago. I wasn't out in the dark, but I do remember hearing some sort of large cat (not a Tabby!) screaming across from our hotel. Maybe there's more than cars to worry about there?
I sure hope things start to turn around for cyclists and pedestrians here in the good ole US of A.
SpinFreak, I couldn't agree more, and people wonder why their "golden years" aren't so golden. Maybe we just don't take life seriously enough until too late.
