Monochrome Ink Jet

I'm looking for an ink jet printer that ONLY has a black ink cartridge. I do not need any color printing done with this particular printer. Any suggestions? So far I've only been able to find information on laser printers and for what I need they are not really what I need. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My experience is based on a large number of HP printers. They have separate black and color cartridges so you would only need to purchase black refills and not colors you would not use.

Kathy,

Here's a link to a real cheap HP printer: view link

I looked on Google to see if there were any current B&W only inkjets, and couldn't find one in the 5 minutes I searched.

Can you buy a cheapie color printer and only fill the Black ink slot? With today's finicky technology, I'll bet that most printers would give you some type of an error message until you actually shoved something into the color bay, even if you had no intention of ever using it.

Price is decent. But read the specs and the review.

My printing preferences for my HP Photosmart C4599 let me set to print in grayscale instead of color. I think I agree that checking your current printer for an option like that and just buying black ink might be a cheaper solution than buying something else.

pete, you can run a printer the way you suggest, but, that will kill the colour print head. even with

a empty colour cartridge in, it will kill the print head for colour . so, if, after a while you you decide to put a full colour cart in that printer , nothing will happen.

My HP has a setting in it to specify color/black only printing. Of course, like me, it is older.

Well a person could go to Walmart and buy a refurbished all in one and just use it for black and white . It wouldn't matter if the color quit working . I paid 40 dollar for my Cannon IP190 all in one !

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. The first thing I thought of doing was just putting in black ink and letting the color cartridges in, just empty. Turns out this particular printer won't print ANYTHING without all the cartridges being full. May just have to invest in a newer model that will let you print even with empty cartridges in the slots. As long as only the black works the print head being hurt for the empty color cartridge area is not a problem.

Again, thanks for all the great help.

I have an HP F380 and refill my own cartridges with a kit I bought at Sam's Club several years back for about $17. I have never tried it but I suppose instead of putting color inks in the color cartridge I could put in just black in all three compartments in that cartridge. Maybe someone else has experimented further.

Kathy. Get a laser printer. 2000 pages from one cartridge. The output looks just like inkjet. I got a Samsung for $39. 2500 pages from 1st cartgridge, $16 to refill it (very easy). I am working on the 3rd refilled cardridge. The inkjet will give you about 50 pages (maybe), and cost you $29 to $39 to replace the cartridges. Try Tigerdirect.com for the best deals. Very Reliable.
