Light reading

Even though I spend too much time at the computer, I still read books. My current selection has a lot of information that's taking me some time & effort to mentally digest. Truthfully, sometimes my poor brain feels worn out :-) To offset that feeling, I intersperse the heavier subjects with fiction, right now T. S. Eliot & one of Hemingway's stories.

I also used to subscribe to a number of magazines, most of which are available online now like National Geographic or American Bungalow. (While I miss the pleasure of finding the newest issue in the mailbox, I feel a little better knowing I'm not part of the that whole paper process.)

My guilty secret is reading crime fiction -- it's like eating a bowl of ice cream in the middle of the night, lol!

What magazines or periodicals do you subscribe to? What sort of light reading do you enjoy to relax, or just for fun?

AARP Magazine It's is read as soon as I get it. also "Prevention", and the "Readers Digest".. Readers digest has such a variety of items that I rarely throw away but pass it on to someone else. I like National Geographic also, but find I enjoy it online more since you can research anything at all and look at all the fantastic photographs all in one evening.

I am a pretty heavy magazine reader. I get Newsweek, American Prospect, the Wilson Quarterly, the New Yorker and the Chicago version of Time Out. I also get the Chicago Tribune Daily and read it Daily. But I also very light crime fiction. I also TIVO a lot of TV stuff. I still have and am slowly savoring the last season of Boston Legal. Have followed top Chef all season and also the next Iron Chef. Also have Mad Men, Dexter, and Masterpiece Theater Mysteries all still available. I have also thoroughly enjoyed Monk since its beginnings as well as Psyche and now White Collar. What I don't do much of is going to movies. Read reviews but never actually watch the movie.

I used to have a subscription to the New Yorker & Atlantic Monthly -- loved both of them :-)

Oh, I really liked Utne Reader too; their eclectic mix of subjects was always interesting. Popular Science can pull me in as well.

I used to read the newspaper all the time, 7 days a week - but that was mostly because it gave me something to do at work on break & lunch. That way if the conversations of my co-workers devolved too much, I could read the paper & ignore them, lol! I mean, how many times can you listen to somebody talk about the last NASCAR race or whether the Cowboys were going to win on Saturday? Spectator sports are just not my thing.

I subscribe to the Smithsonian magazine, read a local paper every day, and am on a Carl Hiassen kick. He's hilarious.

I get American Prospect and Poets and Writers mag. We also get the AARP mag and that is always informative. I'm always reading, fiction mostly. I too like crime fiction and am partial to the Spenser series by Robert B. Parker. I also like true crime but have found that those books are generally not very well-written.

My favorite light reading (aside from Mind Reading 101 in wondering how others might perceive me) is Louis L'Amour Westerns. It's my favorite escape literature for several reasons. Every PLACE that he describes not only actually exists, but had been scouted by L'Amour himself either by horseback (usually) or hiking. Knowing a certain natural terrain at a particular season is fascinating to me. Also, his Western Sheriffs and hired hands were cut from a moral fiber representing the best of their Wild West age. The cowboy always (as far as I remember) gets the girl in the end, and kisses his horse goodbye into the fading sunset ... or something like that.
In desperation I also enjoy the Tom Clancy stuff because there ain't no more Ian Flemings popin' up anywhere. Clancy's is good, but there's nothing to compare with the old "James Bond" stuff.

Twilight, Harry Potter, Lost DaVinci Demon Symbol, stuff like that. Sometimes I flip through Grimm's Fairy Tales or The Annotated Mother Goose.

"Gimme Shelter"--not about the Rolling Stones, but a woman who spent 3 years trying to find a suitable house to buy in one of the boroughs of NY that wasn't overpriced.

"Dillinger-His Wild Ride"--Gives an insider view of how a midwestern farm boy was harshly sentenced for a crime in his 20s, got an education in prison from hardened criminals, was public enemy #1, wanted by the FBI and was betrayed and gunned down at age 31. I like the parallels of the 1920s Depression to today's robber barons. A recent movie was released last Oct starred Johnny Depp in "Public Enemies."

"What Falls Away" An autobiography of actress Mia Farrow, her court battle with Woody Allen, her adoption of special needs children (15).

"The NY Regional Singles Halloween Dance" Written by a stand up comedian in her 20s, though a little early in life to be writing a memoir. She wrote about her life as a student at NYU trying to stay true to herself in a commitment to her religion (she's a Mormon) in a world of temptation in NYC. It's cute, charming and funny.

Harper's magazine, and Sun. Read a daily newspaper. And a lot of books. For entertainment, mostly mystery (though, I contend, almost every fiction book is a mystery). I subscribe to several cooking magazines and was devastated when Gourmet folded. Narrative online.

The only time I read magazines anymore is online or at the doctor's office. I'm on a ligh sci-fi kick at the moment and just finished The Magicians by Lev Grossman. I liked it so much that I'm currently reading Codex, another Lev Grossman book. The next book on my list is The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins. It's a book on evolution beginning in the present day and working its way back through all that came before us.
