NEW HERO

The World Peace post prompted me to share. I have a new hero. His name is Greg Mortenson, and he has written two very stunning books. The first was, "Three Cups of Tea". The latest is "Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, not bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan". The military is beginning to listen.
I quote from Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff: "all of us are better off when all of us have the opportunity to learn, especially our children. By helping them learn and grow, Greg is shaping the very future of a region and giving hope to an entire generation."
Central Asian Institute, Pennies for Peace, and both books have websites. A truly remarkable man, and a remarkable mission. I have learned much.

Thanks for the tip. However, I have a question about "the military is beginning to listen."

The Military is not set up to give out books and spread peace in the world. Maybe we need another organization to give out books and spread peace. One of my friends spent a long time in the Army and he described the purpose of that organization.

Join the Army and see interesting parts of the World. Meet interesting people all over the World and kill them.

I have heard about this man. I think I saw him on one of the thousands of news shows that I watch.

Donna knows about the Army, she is a Blue Star Mom. I believe she wished they would do more constructive rather then destructive operations.

Thank you Roger!

Bernie, Gregs first book was purchased and distributed to 10,000 Army soldiers over seas two years ago. It is also a required read for the junior class at West Point. This man is doing his best to convince our military seniors at the same time he is doing his work, he has been very successful, 151 schools in the most remote regions. My son, just finished his Marine Corps contribution, and he shared that he KNEW he must drink tea with the elders of the village. Join me in my mission of hope. This is the very best I can do. I have learned so much from his books.
Be fair, open your heart. Check out his websites: Pennies for Peace, Cental Asia Institute.

i have met Greg Mortenson, and he is my hero also! I still need to read his new book Stones into Schools. Three Cups of Tea is an absolute must read! tells the history of how he got into all this.. he was a world class mountain climber at one time, ....pretty interesting stuff. now he's building schools in the mountains of Afghanistan, and promoting education for young women!
do you know that one penny pays for one pencil? ....think about it. if you can donate five dollars, think about how many pencils that will buy! so little can do so much.
Please check out the Central Asia Institute and send whatever you can.... I donate annually view link

High! This man sounds like a good human being; but if I had any money or resources to help young people, I'd use them RIGHT HERE in THIS country.

In California, libraries are closing, even schools are closing (with the students now being bussed to other districts), and students have to buy their own basic supplies, everything from paper-to-pens-to-crayons, something most of them, and their families, CAN'T AFFORD! Every year here in the Sacramento area, they have a big school supplies fund drive, with sponsors like Staples, or Office Depot, where you can either make a donation, or buy a backpack, completely filled with school supplies! I know Sacramento County isn't the only county doing this -- up-and-down our state, everyone involved in the educational system is looking for ways to provide JUST THE BASICS to ALL students.

Not like when we went to school, right? Everything given to us FOR FREE -- i even belonged to after-school art classes, like ceramics, and I NEVER had to pay for any clay or glaze! It was all provided by the district. That was also back when it wasn't necessary for most "moms" to work... Now even WITH both parents working, they can't pay for anything but food, shelter, and the most necessary things -- so items like education, and health care, end up at the bottom of their priorities. Anyway, I'd like to see educational improvement efforts done here at home, 1st. Stay High and Peace! Alison
