I'm not, but my daughter works at a fabric store in SC, she said the people are impatient and outright nasty any more. Not enjoyable to go to work and take that day after day.

I have found that this outlet has been full of folks that are actually HAPPY, I know :/ to have found us. I hear them retell their stories of fear of the economy. I guess when they see our prices they gain a little of the holiday spirit back. I do think this would be the case at the store I managed in the past. Rising costs cause emotional reactions and the employee usually takes the brunt.
Sorry Freemind, I don't work in retail but do work part-time. I cannot tell you how others might be thinking, but I have (within the past six months) cut back on my work since I believe that I can live on my retirement now and it is a hit, but I am surviving. I will soon be 71 so don't want to work forever.
As much as I would love to buy those big appliances, (So very much as mine are needing replaced) I am hanging on to my old stuff as they still work and holding on to my little savings just in case.
I do not feel comfortable that the recession is lifting no matter what I read in the paper, I feel the chill when I am at our Mall or Big Box stores. The shoppers all have the same look that I do, frustrated and tired but determined to stay standing. We are making do.
It is the economy plain and simple. All front-line people seem to be putting out extra effort to make our shopping experience a good one. Hats off to them as it cannot be easy.
As I drive down the streets of a little town that is usually hit last by anything, I see closing stores, vacant buildings, know that unemployment is epidemic, and it does not do much to bolster confidence. People our age have been through something like this before and we will maintain, but it is with great effort, prayer, and faith that there will be a better time.
I am so grateful for what I do have but it will take effort to hang on to it in the future. I am most willing to sacrifice want for need during these times.
Ilove, the effort mentioned in your response may be the key of it all. Many of the retail workers I know do put forth the effort, it is the average customer that seems comfortable taking out their own angst with the worker. I do wonder though if my little discount store doesn't ease folks with our low prices thus creating some affordable joys.We are all in this together.
Our salespersons are working hard for a living. They don't make a lot of money. They make no major decisions in the workplace and are there only to help you. Anyone that gives them grief should be so ashamed.
I make sure that I give every salesperson a big smile and an even bigger thank you for the services they provide.
If you have a problem take it to the manager or owner who has helped make the rules that the salespeople must adhere to but, even then, be courteous and professional and never angry. You will get so much more accomlished.
