I just flung my netbook in the trash!

I'm going shopping for a big girl laptop but I don't want to spend a lot because seriously it's just for travel. I'm thinking a Dell - Inspiron Laptop with Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor - $500 at Best Buy. Any comments? Yays or Nays?

I bought one of those this summer along with a wireless card from AT&T. I currently use it mostly for internet access and e-mail at my summer place and when I travel. Eventually, I expect it to replace my PC at home, which is almost 5 years old now. It has the Vista Operating system, which I may replace with Windows 7, but to be honest, it hasn't bothered me at all, so the jury is out on that.

Serious, you flung it in the trash?

Been using a dell XPS and lattitude for a few years now and still running great. They are both loaded down with SQL and office software and no problems. Inspiron's are not to bad either. But when it comes down to it. To each there own.....

you really threw the netbook in the trash....? LOL Actually also carry a ASUS Netbook with linux for a backup.

Of Acers, I have had ..... let's see, let me count: one small core fried by a lightening strike. One really nice big screen laptop, fried by same lightening strike. One desktop, about two years old, doing well, however the wireless card stopped working and I use one of those plug in USB wireless gizmos, and guess what. It is loose. Gotta do a bit a jiggling of it from time to time. Have another Acer laptop that the power connection inside the unit stopped connecting. Acer dealer here says he has no part for that, has to order. Will cost almost as much as a new cheap Acer laptop, therefore that laptop currently sitting in closet. The oldest laptop, my 300 year old model, is still chugging along nicely. However, I must warn you with regard to Acers: they are like an old Plymouth I used to have. Engine ran great, never a problem. But parts kept falling off the rest of it. Door handles, the frame around the headlight, and a bunch of other stuff. My elderly Acer laptop? The connection where you plug in the blue ethernet cord for direct connection to your modem? No longer works. Jiggling and licking the end of the cable used to work, but no longer. Now the connection where you plug in the headset prongs? Getting iffy. Starting to need a lot of jiggling to maintain connection, or holding in place. So hard to have a conversation and still multitask effectively.

But the engine in it is running great.

view link I was impressed by the lithium battery. I'm not going to ask it to do a whole lot, just keep me company on the couch every now and then and mostly for travel. Yes, flung it in the trash and I've little or no separation angst.

Shoot, if that netbook is still good, why throw it away when you can donate it to a school, hospital, or even a senior citizens group? Or, maybe even to some group that refurbishes computers to give to someone/a student during these holidays that might not have a chance at having a computer otherwise?

gdiva,

that 14" screen is not much bigger than a netbook's 12" screen. You might wanna bump up into the Dell Studio line and check out the Studio 15.

Here's a 15.6" screen size.....

$600 at dell.com.

As for brand preference, you're gonna get opinions all over the lot, so you'll just have to make your own decision on that one. The only thing that "most" people never mention are Gateways and eMachines, and there might be a reason for that.

I'm partial, I have a Studio 17 that's been great but it's not used like a road warrior would use it. For you, for light duty stuff and browsing, and no need to run Excel, Powerpoint or Word simultaneously, the $5-600 range should be fine.

The stuff under the hood on that Dell at Best buy is older technology, which means "cheaper", "slower", BUT also, "tested under varying conditions by many people all over the world"

my emachine's first boot screen is GATEWAY, it's gone in a flash, but long enough to see it, if your watching..

Wow! I volunteer with a nonprofit charitable organization that would gladly give you a tax ded receipt for a used laptop or netbook. We work them over and take them to Guatemala for students that need them! We would love to get a few more this year! Just let me know!! Kare
