Actually a side car rig only has three wheels. In New York you need a motorcycle license
motorcycle license here in florida also. i will say that if i get too old to feel safe balancing a bike that a sidecar car for us is a viable option whereas a trike is not.

Why a sidecar and not a trike, PC?
In every state that I know of a hack is a three wheeled vehicle and requires a MC endorsement or license definitely in Ohio

marti,
well once you get past the fact that trikes are ugly and look like they are made to carry a hover-round rolling wheelchair they are incredibly unstable. i saw this 1st hand at the tail of the dragon where these rolling chicanes were allowed to operate. even when doing the posted corner speed limits they were lifting the inside wheel. before we went we reviewed the fatality chart and i just could not understand why so many more trikes were involved in fatal accident even compared to a sportbike but after watching them i understood.
sidecars however are classy looking and much more stable. the only real trick to them i have felt on the one occasion that i got to drive a side hack is under accelleration they will try to go left and under decelleration they want to go right kind of like the old mini-cooper cars do.
but the stability thing is why i would never get a trike.

my take goes like this ...trike ..nope...sidehack ..no way jose when I can't do two wheels then maybe the alternative is the... hover round chair.
no no no on the hover round. here is my idea of fun at 70

since peg would only be 67 she should still be limber enough to hang off
but Jack I am older than you two, so I'll drive my hover round chair and watch you both...and....laugh...oh how I'll laugh.
well the sidecar is kind of an inside joke made over a few too many beers while using my 12,000 grit aluminum oxide and sewing machine oil paste in a shop full of old polihing rags filled with the fumes from semichrome polish and listening to quicksilver messenger service signing "what ya do about me" and "clean air" not to mention "shady groves" (going to shady grove my honey where all the pigs have tails) and peg's favorite "bears". now in the midst of this frivolity i showed her a pic of this sidecar and said ya know if we win the lottery we can rent a rig like this and do the isle of man. in a moment of true weakness peg said hell yeah i've done the tail of the dragon and that looks like fun and the ride i got on the vincent racing sidecar was cool in daytona this winter so yeah if you win the lottery i'll do it!!! she had more beer then me and by god i am holding her feet to the fire on this one lol!!!

ps. go ahead and laff. heck if i win you can go too and we will set you down at the gooseneck turn with a cooler full of the adult beverage of you choice. we should be quite the sight braking down from the run down from the waterworks to make that 30mph corner. but that is assuming we make it thru ramsey!!!
