Do you have Amish near you? An Amish Playground.

We have many Amish very near to us. I was especially intrigued with these school pictures. In many photo groups I'm in, they have said that Amish don't mind their pictures being taken. If there is interest among you Wisconsinites, I will show pictures of Amish children at "recess", and how "I" was shunned. More pictures in first reply.

The Teacher “Drives” To School In A Buggy.

The School Is Located In The Foreground Of An Amish Farm--notice the smoke from chimney--burning wood.

I Only “Dared” To Take This Picture Of The Back Of Amish Buggy--in a post later--you’ll see the Amish schoolchildren (outside for recess) and their reaction to me taking their pictures.

Nearby Merchants Really Get Into Advertising & Perhaps Taking Advantage Of Our Local Amish Heritage--this buggy is mounted on a roof overhang above the store entry.

There are a number of Amish communities near LaCrosse. I have often driven through the area slightly south and east of LaCrosse and seen buggies, businesses etc. There have been small communities elsewhere as well. Some were or are living near Loganville (north of Spring Green).

These pictures were taken a short distance from my home on a country road that runs parallel with HI 12 & 16 and also I-90-94. The closest bigger town is Tomah (where the Amish Country Corner is located). La Crosse is about 40 miles west of there. There are many Amish also located between Cashton and Ontario (both somewhat south of Tomah and neighboring town of Sparta).

I hope others will respond as to what is in their area of WI, and also what is the Amish (if they are familiar with) opinion on having their pictures taken?

I always thought that Amish kept to themselves most of the time and weren't any kind of threat to others. I never lived in an area with a lot of Amish, so I guess the apparent quaintness of their buggies and homes and dress and appearance makes me think that they're harmless and peaceful -- am I wrong?

I remember seeing a lot of them last Spring when I was driving through Wisconsin up near Pardeeville, I waved at them and they waved back, seemed friendly enough. I did find it a bit odd that they'd walk down the middle of a highway as if there was no danger, and drive their buggies "in harm's way" on the same highways -- I just drove a lot slower and more carefully.

BTW "Horde" has a negative connotation to it, that's what sparked this post of mine.

Nice pictures Eduk8er...Your pictures are always so interesting. Thanks.

A few years ago, my daughter and I went on a bus tour to Cranberry Fest in Warren. We also went through an Amish area whhere the Amish came onto the bus with their little kids (all dresses in Amish garb) to sell their goods. It seems they're getting comercialized and using their quintness as a selling point. Farmers' Markets are full of them too. Have anyone else noticed this? Are their rules changing?

There are no Amish in my area that I am aware of. I have to agree with Mike, I do think they keep to themselves. Perhaps if you live in an area near them you may see them from time to time.
