So sad

I met a Gold Headed Amazon, 50yrs old, yesterday in a cage about the size of my parrotlet, just sitting there. The owner says it's mean and never let out. It had only 2 toys!
I asked her if I could bring it some toys and she said he destroys them, which I know, but will take anyway.
I made Birdie Bread for my little Ava yesterday and I'm taking a couple down to that poor bird and only hope she let's him have them.
I've had him on my mind since I saw him sitting so sad and depressed in that cage taht wasn't near big enough. Poor thing.
I just needed a place to share.
I can't imagine the poor thing never being held, kissed, scratched or played with.

Wow! I thought I'd replied to this right after you posted it. But I guess the cyber-gremlins had other ideas!

This is despicable - a beautiful and intelligent creature being treated like this. WHY does this person bother to keep this bird? I'd guess maybe she can't recoup her "investment", so she and the bird are forced to be miserable together.
She says "it's mean" and so she never lets it out! Ask this gal as nicely as you can, how you'd feel about being kept in a cell where she didn't have room to even stretch - let alone exercise!!! Idiot!

Tell her that parrot "toys" aren't supposed to be played with and then put away for another day, like human kids would be expected to do. Birds NEED things they can tear up and investigate. Hell, a good toy, for a parrot, can be pieces of cardboard!

laatee, you ought to try to educate this gal so that she comes to understand she's being CRUEL to this bird. Of course, you'll need to be diplomatic about it. But I'd say (unless it's going to cause trouble for you)she needs to be brought to the attention of the SPCA. This is no less torture than keeping a dog in a cage that's too small for it to do anything but just sit there - on the strength of the fact that it'll make a mess if left out!

Yes - please - take it some toys - some easily shreddable toys - and show it praise as it tears them up. Maybe this cretin will get a clue. Let us know how this develops, eh? And thanks for caring.

It makes me mad as well as sad as these intelligent and emotional creatures need so little from us - a good sized cage, toys and attention and in return we get unconditional love. (and yes, a bite or two when the hormones rage) She may not know better and she may not be willing to learn or change and may not be able to afford a bigger cage. Do bring the poor bird toys and birdie bread when you can. Maybe the owner will either change or offer you the bird. Thanks for sharing this with us and ,please keep us update.

I abhor stories like this.....my Military macaw (Tabu), B&G macaw(Tequila), catalina macaw(Louie) are never in cages. My SI Eclectus is at night for security purposes. He feels more secure. We have 6.5 to 7' tree perches that they sleep on. I have 3 cats and 3 dogs and they never bother the birds. During the day the birds are allowed to wander the house or take a little fly over if they want. They always go back to the perch to poop. They are so happy this way. They chat, come sit on our laps, play and roll over and then go back....I treat mine as if they were a 2 or 3 yr old child, I have watchful eyes on them and let them play and roam. Most of mine were neglected or abused before I got them.

Just an update. This sad bird passed away. The lady never tok it to the vet, just let it sit on the bottom of the cage until it passed. And then shed tears!

Tears of sadness or tears of guilt? That's the question.

I would not have restrained myself - I probably would have at the very least smacked her. At least he doesn't have to suffer any more.
