Happy Chanukah: maybe!

The Book of Maccabees never made the cut in the TaNaCh, but did make it into the Catholic Bible.

Do you know why?

Because the Rabbis who were responsible for editing the TaNaCh were a little embarrassed about this family.

Judah Maccabee is one of the more misunderstood leaders in Jewish history. He was not, for one thing, a paragon of tolerance. One of the contradictions of Hanukkah--an unexplored contradiction in our culture's anodyne understanding of the holiday--is that the Maccabee brothers were fighting not for the principle of religious freedom but only for their own particular religion's freedom. Their understanding of liberty did not extend even--or especially--to the Hellenized Jews of Israel's coastal plains. The Maccabees were rough Jews from the hill country of Judea.

And their descendants were some of the most ruthless leaders in the history of the Jews.

And I think today the celebration of Chanukah, at least for me, is a mixed blessing. I get depressed. (It could also be the lack of sunlight.)

Bernie,

Could your depression be due to a latke deficiency rather than lack of sunlight?

Happy Chanukah,

Bernie: I get depressed from a lack of sunlight, too. It's raining today. Ugh!

All books in the TaNaCh were incorporated through prophesy. The era of the prophets ended with Malachi (the last of the prophets) almost 200 years before the story of Chanukah. Which would explain simply why the story of Chanukah was not included.

"Why is the Book of Maccabees included then in the Catholic Bible and most Protestant Bibles up to 1815, but it is missing from the TaNaCh?" (BTW the Jewish Ethiopian Bible also contains the Book of Maccabees.)

The Rabbis at the Council of Yavneh (c 100 CE), who were responsible for editing the TaNaCh, were also the target of abuse from this family. The rule of the Hasmonean dynasty (140–37 BCE) was brutal and bloody. They were from the Priestly caste who created a theocracy combining the "Lunatic Fringe" of their religion with absolute power.

Another theory is that the editing was done under the Roman rulers and the story of Jewish Rebels was not quite politic.

Perhaps the editing was done, as you suggest, for purely theological reasons, i.e., the end of the prophets. However, I believe this is the most unlikely reason.

And how about the custom of gift giving? Is this a tradition of Chanukah? Or is this part of the Jewish "Christmas envy" mishagash? view link

Rabbi Gordis has some interesting things to say about trying to be Jewish in a Christian World. He calls it the "December dilemma" view link

Since my extended family is Christian, I celebrate Christmas with them ...And I enjoy it, without thinking that I am compromising my Judaism. Chanukah, for me, is not a holiday in competition with Christmas, it is a time for reflection on the struggle between the universal and the particular, a time for reflection on the theological and the practical. It is a time of Peace.

"Peace, Peace, when there is no Peace." (Jeremiah 6:14)

"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Jesus Matthew 5:44)

It is not necessary for Peace that your enemies should also love you. It is necessary and sufficient ONLY that your enemies love their children more than they hate you. (Paraphrased from Golda Meir)

In the meantime, if your enemies hate you more than they love their own children and they plot to kill you, then you must get up early in the morning and kill them first. (Talmud Berakoth 58a)

There is abundant Peace in the World to Come (Olam Habah). The problem is that Peace in This World (Olam Hazeh) is in short supply. It is not necessary for you to love your enemy and pray for them in order for there to be Peace in This World. It is necessary and sufficient ONLY that you love your children more than you hate your enemies.

So I have no problem wishing my Christian family and friends "a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year!"
