I say "Merry Christmas" unless I know for certain that someone celebrates something else. If I am corrected, I just smile and say the appropriate greeting for them.
I'm Christian, but don't take exception to someone saying "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas." It's all said with good intentions and that's how I prefer to take it.
I never understood the big deal that Bill O'Reilly made about saying Merry Xmas vs. Happy Holidays. As KellyAlee noted, it's all said with good intentions. The right just wants a bunch of robots saying what they want to hear.
Yes they want to rule the worls, yet they say they want small Gov't. The 1st time I gave any thought to this was yrs. ago when I had my own business. Even tho I celebrated XMas (if ya want to call it celebrating) lol I new that some of my clients were eeefinately not Christian.. I new I at least had some Jewish clients.. This was back when that show "Dinosaurs" was on TV. They had a parody show called "refrigerater Day" Parody of XMas.. Sooo I put up a banner saying "happy Refrigerer Day" (very few got it) lol Saying Marry Christmas to thoise who you do not know are Christian is weel assuming that they or everyone is.. Also the overflow of alll the Xmas stuff ( I believe) can be overwhelming to many... Soo instead of the happieast time of yr.. it can be a nightmare pushed on many.
For me it's, "Happy Christmas" and receive whatever greeting is returned. You are right. This time of year has become way too overwhelming to most. Capitalists, let us have at least one holiday. Including Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwaanza, and all other celebrants of the time of year. And let us have something other than greed on which to base our gift giving.
I never heard of "a holiday tree?" if ya don't do Xmas ya probably should not be doing a tree.. Really do some folks do a tree without it being a Christmas tree?
