Trees aplenty

Last weekend I planted 9 trees. 2 Sargent crabapples, 2 eastern redbuds, 2 washington hawthorns, 2 white flowering dogwoods and 1 crapemyrtle, whew...If your wondering why, I joined the Arbor Day Foundation and they sent them to me. I just couldn't let them die, could I? I have two trees that I "heeled in". That is done to keep the trees alive but not really plant them. You dig a angled trench, lay the trees in the trench and cover the roots. Now you must know all the "trees" I planted were just little sticks. It was still quite a bit of work getting all the holes readdy and finally today my back is not spazing out. It is neat to think long after I'm gone someone may just look at the trees and wonder who planted these? Planting trees is a very satisfying to me and all the trees are bird friendly, with fruits, berries and such.

I did that last year and my husband ran over two of my redbuds with the lawn mower a couple of weeks ago. Grrrrrrr..... He said they were just sticks and he thought they were dead. Grrrrr.... He better be glad I can't find those sticks now. I'd probably beat his behind with them.

I hope at least he feels bad about it, otherwise I'm sure you could find a bigger better stick.

Every time I would plant a tree or shrub I would put a iron fence post next to them, that way
my husband would not be able to mow them over.

He is my late husband as I lost him in 2005. He would do the riding lawn mowing and I would
do the hand mowing. Now I have to do it all and I have a BIG yard and no way I can make it
smaller. My next home will have a much smaller yard.
Do you have a big yard hippiemama ?

My husband knew those trees were there. He's been mowing around them for a while. There is a big bare circle around them, so there was no way that he just didn't see them. He just didn't want to mow around them....grrrrr..... Besides I can't get him to understand that trees (even little bitty ones) don't just die when they shed their leaves..... grrrrr.....

I planted some Pampas grass once. He didn't like the idea at all, so he just ran over it with the mower....grrrrrr....said he didn't see it. Yeah right. It was only 4 ft. tall.

Hippiemama, if you want a husband that mows, send me $100.00 bucks for the lawn mower and I'll throw the husband in for free. Oh hell...... on second thought...... just pay shipping and you've got a deal.

Anybody pick up on the fact that my dear husband has been getting on my nerves to the nth degree lately?

Oh never mind, Hippiemama, just send me your address and I'll ship him and the mower out tomorrow. For a 100 bucks I'll ship everything else he owns on Tuesday. Deal?

Hey, I remember those times when I would have shipped mine for free. Thanks for the laugh.

My trees from Arbor Day Foundation arrived on Friday, coldest day we've had to date this "fall", with instructions to plant immediately. Right! In a cold rain. So between rain showers I heeled them in outside the window by my computer so I can keep an eye on them to be sure the dog doesn't see them as playthings & run off with them. My son probably will want to have a few of them to take to his house but I'm not sure which ones so I can't plant until I hear from him.

Ok, girls, where do I sign up to ship a husband? Mine doesn't mow but he does make the bed, run the vacuum, and clear the supper dishes.

We've had seed swaps in this group, but it looks like a spouse swap is starting up now!

Good luck on your round robin husband exchange, LOL.

GRM, I think that I would go to the local nursery and buy larger more expensive trees to replace the ones he mows down and make sure he sees the bill and tell him that you will replace every one plant he mows down with two bigger and more expensive ones. He will probably cut a couple more down, but he will get tired of burning money like that real fast. Make sure that he gets to feel the pain of the expenses by cutting back on spending money on stuff he likes, like excursions or snacks or whatever he values. You could also ask him for trees and plants for your birthday, anniversary and Christmas presents. Ask him to take you to the nursery to pick out the plants and have him pull out his wallet to pay. He will be a bit slower to destroy what he bought and paid for himself.
