New to group, "old" to crochet :)

Hi ~ I am new to this group, and I'm hoping to talk about crocheting little hats for babies in the hospital or else larger hats for homeless people. My grandmother taught me to crochet, and I used to make exquisite things, it was a challenge when I was a kid, but a couple of years ago I tried again, and found my hands got tired. So I hope to talk with you all about these topics. Maybe I should be knitting caps instead of crocheting, just for the texture of the product. I'd like to know what you think about that, too.

Hi Hello and Welcome. I knit and crochet. I think crocheting is faster. What ever you feel most comfortable doing. Wonderful, that you do the hats for the homeless people. Happy Holidays to you. Bumbi

Welcome LnsLrnd,

I just recently found some patterns for crocheted hats that are very nice and the fabric that is created appears to be very flexible. I haven't finished the first one. I should have it done by tonight so I will let you all know what I think. The patterns use 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn ( approx 400 yds).

There is an organization with a mission of providing caps for chemo patients. They have tons of hats on their site, headhuggers.org. I have knit caps using their patterns.

I too share Bumbi's sentiments about knitting vs. crocheting. As for hats I feel that they shouldn't have seams. that being said, I detest using double pointed needles. There is a relatively new way to use knitting needles with cables to knit in the round using a single pair (magic loop). I haven't tried it yet and as soon as the Christmas gifts are done I am going to invest in a pair of size 9 needles with a cable that is at least 36".

Thank you both for your replies. Today I feel like something the cat dragged in...LOL But since I'm looking to try some long-term projects, I don't have to try to get it done by Christmas. Have a great weekend!
