Caldecott?
Well, the first Mock Caldecott committee has come in with a predicted winner. The Springfield group just posted their choice: Jerry Pinkney's The Lion and the Mouse. It's a nearly wordless version of the Aesop's fable. I like it a lot, and Jerry has been a bridesmaid but never a bride for the Caldecott.
I also am crazy about one of their Honor Books: Pouch by David Ezra Stein. It's the story of a little kangaroo who wants to explore his world but yells "Pouch!" and zooms back into his mom's pouch at every novel experience - until he meets a friend.
Dare we hope that the real committee will choose one of these child-friendly books over some exotic work of art??
Do any of you have a favorite?
