I've done this several times over the years, and it has always worked for me. I pull comparable sales from public records and houses for sale and go to the assessor's office with documentation. When the town did revaluation last year, they hired a company that only did exterior views -- and they never interviewed us. So they had no idea that there were major municipal projects on the drawing board that would change the neighborhood significantly. We brought all that info to the assessor's hearing and our taxes were lowered 20%.
Like the article says, you have to know when the appeal window ends, though, since after that, you can't complain.

I filed a form to appeal my house taxes. I was sure my house was way over valued. I got a letter a couple weeks ago and they lowered my evaluation by 10,000 dollars.
