Wilderness Family Johnsons........

........... I originally had written this usurpation as a caption to a photo in one of my earliest Profile Page photos on Eons, around the first months I had joined Eons in the spring-summer of 2007. It was one of my many life adventures with a twist of sorts. Enjoy......
........... The Wilderness Family Johnsons was one of the shortest lived dreams of our lives, 1 July 1982 to 7 February 1983. In the adds at the back pages of the MotherEarth News magazine to which we subscribed sometime in the spring of 82', my wife Teri spotted an add requesting a caretaker for a wilderness mountain property in Del Norte county, northern California, in the Six Rivers National Forest, and adjoining Jedidiah Smith Wilderness area of the Redwoods National Forest. It was six miles south of the Oregon border by air. We fell in love with the area right away.............

12/7/09...It was right near the Oregon border in the wildest mountains of northern Califonia in Del Norte county, and just over the Coastal Cascades that were covered in huge Cedars, and Redwoods, and Spruce forests, about forty miles from the coast. It was an awesome and a hardly damaged by man area of wild america.........
..........We went down for an interview, and thought the fellow Dr. Sonnenburg and his family seemed cool and he liked us. He was particularly enthused with the fact I was a combat veteran and former green beret, and that my unusual set of skills as a trained and experienced demolition specialist, and tracker-hunter-killer...........
..........He was also noticably thrilled at all my blue eyed, blond haired sons. We took the job and in two months had cut all our ties up in the Mt. Hood-Portland Oregon area, and moved on to the side of Sonnenburg Mountain in the Six Rivers Wilderness with Little Jones Creek running down through it. It was a square mile of private land surrounded on all sides by the National Forest and Wilderness, sitting on top of a mountain. Dr. Sonnenburg renamed it Sonnenburg Mountain Retreat after buying it three or four years earlier, it was really the beginning of an unusual fortress............
...........At first the good doctor was allowing us to build a log cabin, but that transgressed into the dome he felt was more durable and safer. He was the boss, so my feelings didn't much matter. It still seemed cool for a few months.........
...........Right away the doctor issued me and my wife firearms, including machine guns, and automatic assault rifles, and automatic handguns. That still didn't seem all that weird because there were many well armed enclaves in the forest around us there. It just seemed defensive at first. Ultimately, as I was hired to secure and protect the property also, and patrol it's four mile perimeter daily, I finally had my first run in with poachers and tresspassers, some were scary because I had the power to kill them, and had to learn diplomacy to keep from killing anybody..........
.............One day the good doctor arrived up from Crescent City for the weekend, and was all aghast with highly stressed excitement, and I soon learned that an oil embargo had started and he was sure war with OPEC nations and the United States would break out very soon and was putting us on alert for enemies............
............Soon enough some hapless grandparents and their grandson that were fishing along Little Jones Creek had come onto the retreat via a large culvert tube that the creek ran through under the forest road, and had no idea they had entered into a private retreat. My watch dogs sounded alarms and I went running out with my assault rifle to discover the intruders.........
...........At first I couldn't see anything in the thick growth along the creek, but my dogs were barking furociously at something, so I raised my automatic weapon into the air, and fired a few rounds to make my presence there known............
............A shrill scream pierced the air. I walk carefully into the thicket of woods to the sound of my barking dogs, and as I broke through some tall brush, there as a adolescent boy with fishing pole in hand, backing up against the growth away from my dogs. He was nearly hysterical it seemed. I commanded my hounds and they moved away quietly. The boy cried to me "where are my grandparents", as an older man and woman broke onto the clearing on the other side of the boy. The woman was terribly stressed and crying, and the man began shouting at me wildly. I shouted above him and asked for calm, and began to hear their story............
...........They were just river and creek fishing in the area, and had no idea they were on private lands, as they had passed onto the retreat through the culvert, and failed to see the sign at the edge of the road above the culvert. We talked and I apologized for scaring th eshit ourt of them, and they promised they would pay better attention to their surroundings as I warned them that theire were many private enclaves in the wilderness around here and that they should be very careful as most were owned by outlaw motorcycle groups like th eHell's Angels, or many independent Vietnam War veterans that were most usually very well armed and could be dangerous to the newbie in the area. They left, but days later while returning from our monthly trip to Grant's Pass OR for food supplies and Kerosene, upon pulling of fof HWY199 onto Little Jones Creek Road, there was a Sheriff patrol car sitting there blocking the road. They were intent on intercepting us or anyone leaving th earea, but instead stopped us while returning. They soon apprised us they were investigating an incident many days earlier of a couple of grandparents and grandson of being accosted and threatened with firearms while fishing up Little Jones Creek. We had to identify our situation, and then turn over all our firearms temporarily. They then contacted Dr. Sonnenburg down in Crescent City, and he worked everything out with the county sheriff department by making a big donation to their widows and orphans fund, and our firearms were returned to us........
..........One day shortly after that while the good doctor and his wife and baby were visiting the retreat, when I addressed him by his name of Bob as usual, he demanded that we only address him as Doctor, or Father, or God from now on. I knew the guy was showing levels of grandiose amibivilence.......
..........A few months later we as a family quit the good doctor's employ there, as he turned out to be an Aryan's Nation leader, and a Neo-Nazi White Supremist. I didn't want my family around that kind of idealism. So we quit, and went back to farming on the slopes of Mt. Hood in Estacada OR........
..........It is strange at how years later in Carson City NV at our "Bead Dreamers" beads and gems supplies shop in 1995, a little local lady who had begun to frequent our little store, began telling me about how she almost had lost her sight to cataracts a few years before, and a doctor in Crescent City Califonia had saved her eyes with superb surgery. I was alarmed by this coincedence, and asked her if the good doctors name was Sonnenburg to which she affirmed it........
..........She then told me how she had heard that he later was reported killed by his own folly, while up at some mountain fortress he owned in the mountains above Gasquet CA, and the Smith River along HWY199, in the Six Rivers Wilderness..........
..........He had slipped upon the icy floor of his mountain retreat one morning as he had appearantly awoken hurredly, and jumped down from his bunk to strike up a fire in the wood stove, and slipped on the icy floor, breaking his neck and killing himself, leaving his wife and son a widow and fatherless. I thought it was karma......

..........gracias mi tia Zoe. We did get out of there safely returning to our old home in Estacada Oregon.......

.........gracias mi amiga Sherri. The guy did hide his weirdness pretty well in the face of the public, an dwas a Crescent City civic leader and church deacon greatly admired, but he was amillionaire and had everyone eating from his hands. It was just up on the mountain that he revealed to me that he had all these weird ideas of creating a perfect little mountain colony of blond blue-eyed nazis. I was more then glad to leave the place when realizing how insane he really seemed, especially when he told us we could call him Father or God. That was the final straw to me, I will worship no man........
