Civis Americanus Sum

'Civis Romanus sum' was the proudest boast any citizen of the ancient world could make.

It was a declaration of allegiance that entitled the individual to the full protection of the Empire’s resources if their liberty was compromised.

Civis Romanus sum. I am a Roman citizen.

Civis Americanus sum. Seems to me that we hear an awful lot of people demanding their rights as citizens who have done nothing to earn them.

In schools now the students learn all their rights and entitlements...

Never a word about responsibilities...

Funny: I am in a lot of classrooms subbing right now and that has not been my experience.

How would you know what they are learning in classrooms these days ??

Seems to me that we hear an awful lot of illegal aliens demanding their rights as citizens who have done nothing to earn them, with Holder helping some in the NYork trials!

Imagine the serious shit storm that is going to erupt if the terrorist scumbags get acquitted in the NY trials ?

Which illegal aliens are you refering to, Sky. I haven't heard that much about them. Do you have a link or can you provide your source for this information?

Dirck, that statement seems to be your most meaningful contribution to every discussion these days. I've seen it posted by you on a couple of different threads in different groups. Do you have anything more substantial to add to the discussion? Perhaps something about the topic of this thread?

It disturbs me when I hear people complaining about the state of democracy in America after which they admit that they don't vote. When questioned about their reasoning the response is usually something to the effect of, "What good would it do?" or "Why should I waste my time?", or "One crook is as bad as another".

If voting is a waste of time to the extent that it makes them refrain from doing it, then isn't complaining the same waste of time?

I will admit that in my youth I sometimes skipped out on voting because I thought I had many more important things to do. In my wisdom (read old age) I've come to the conclusion that there is no more important thing to do than to participate to the fullest extent allowable in the governance of my country. While I agree that politicians are, for the most part, as crooked as they can be and get away with it, this is still the system in which we have to work. We either need to get busy making the system better or get busy finding and implementing a new system.

Merlin , I have posted that exactly twice , once each in two different rooms . Are you trying to become an a-hole like LLL who immediately gets personal about every single thing I post ? My comment directly followed Sky Wolf's comment about the NY trials and was in response to that IF YOU CAN READ .While we often disagree , I have tended to respect your posts , and I DO NOT attack you personally . Your recent run of going personal on me is making me re-think my approach in talking to you .

My apologies, Dirck. I swear to never refer to you by name in a post again. Should I call you 'my esteemed colleague'?
