Right Thing becomes the Wrong Thing.
In these later years, I am increasingly confronted with a dilemma. That being - the Right thing becoming the Wrong thing.
In my youth, motorcycle helmets were rare in my neck-of-the-woods. I would encourage folks to use them. It's a smart thing to do. Then,as they became more common, a law gets passed - now it's ILLEGAL to not use them.
Seatbelts came out. Again, I endorsed seat belts in many driving environments. Again, after they had been out long enough - BANG - ILLEGAL not to use them.
Leaving junk out in the yard always seemed low class to me. I don't wanna be known as "that guy". And I always lobbyed folks not to do that. But now the city has ordinances and the Yard Police are always threatening everyone, in town, because they don't approve of their yard for one anal reason or another.
Recently I had some electronic junk. I could throw it away or recycle. The scrap could be used for constructive purposes, if I recycle; but will just be crap if I threw them away. I recycled it, and would have encouraged others to do so. But now I see that starting January 1 it will be ILLEGAL to throw it out.
Folks, I gotta tell ya, I get the sneaking feeling that I have been an unwitting proponant of Totalitarianism. It's not a very nice feeling. Don't know what to do about it either.
How much better that helmets, seat belts and recycling centers had never been invented, than take the decline of our freedoms that has resulted from them!
I NEVER wear short sleeve shirts when out and about either. Don't believe in them. Will advocate being shortsleeveless to anyone. Now I'm wondering how long it will be till the Police start writing all of you tickets because you're wearing one?
