In the current economic times I would rather the person tell me specifically what they would like or need and I will tell them as well. I don't like buying gifts for people that will not be appreciated or that will be regifted. People are quite fussy these days (even the kids)about what they like so I feel it is better to ask. If they say "just get me anything" then I usually give them cash or a gift card.
lately I have been giving gift cards-- I do not like wasting my money on something people do not want, or something they throw in the closet, or take it back to the store to exchange it for something else. I am watching my money this year and do not want to overspend when I do not have to.
when I am around someone, I pay attention to what they say...like ohhh I love that, and then keep talking about it or whatever...the same with s/o. If you spend time with them, you know what they want or like...or if you watch them when you are out on the town, you might see then looking at something....or hear them tell a buddy, I always wished I had so and so...Usually, I dont have a problem buying for others...I usually have TOO many ideas.
