First off let me say, I've finally stopped shivvering long enough to type. It was a bit nippy this morning at 26 degrees with a fifteen mph wind out of the south..... just the direction I needed to go. Riding into the wind, the wind chill comes down even more. Got down the road a bit toward the highway and there is a place that has four big dogs, that absolutely hate bicyclists. Usually, only one of them manages to sqeeze through the gate opening, but the rest must have went on a diet as soon I had four big dogs chasing me down the road barking and nipping at my heels. It was so bad that a passing motorist stopped to see if he could help, but by then, I had already stopped the bike and told the dogs in no uncertain terms exactly what was going to happen to their masculinity if they didn't go home. I don't think they liked the sound of that too much, so they all went back to the house. I won that round. On the way back, only one came out to give chase, and she didn't seem to be too dismayed by my threats, although she gave up rather quickly. Other than the sparring match with the dogs, the ride was uneventful. Struggling against the wind and cold going down, and enjoying the ride back with the wind at my back, which had now picked up to around 20mph. It warmed all the way up to 30 degrees when I got home.... a regular heat wave. This morning, I wore two pair of tights, a thermal undertop, a heavy winter-weight jersy, vest, and jacket. Along with a winter weight skull cap, and balaclava, heavy winter gloves, and shoe covers and wool socks. I felt like the Michelin man on a bicycle. With a mountain bike however, style isn't as important....staying unfrozen is. There were several places where ice was present on the road, so I was glad I had the mountain bike with knobbies, as well as slow speeds and I was able to avoid any problems. A total of 34 miles down and back, and lots of excersize chasing dogs.
Well now that is a bit colder than I can possibly tolerate. Well, I suppose I could if I wore double the amount of clothing you did! LOL. Out here, folks wear wind resistant "socks" over their bike shoes. I can see where a mountain bike would be the best to ride under the conditions that you wrote about Riki. I don't know how you could out ride those big dogs. They can go really fast in a pack. Good for you for getting out there! As for me, well garageland is starting to look good...
I didn't outride them....I out "BIGGED" them. I skidded my bike to a stop, got off and chased them back home yelling curses and threatning them with bodily harm if I caught them. I turned out to be the biggest dog?????? I also had a pair of Louis Garneau insulated shoe covers, wool socks, and my toes still got cold. Except during the time spent chasing the dogs. I figured what the hey.... if they can chase me and bark and snap....... what's good for the goose......... They don't expect a huge waving snarling growling beast coming right at them yelling obcenities at them and yelling what bad dogs they are. I'm glad nobody has ever gotten a video of this as I wouldn't want anyone to see... it would be the comedy of the year.
Riki, that's just not riding weather. I've opted out of all rides here because of temps in the 30's. Get yourself some pepper spray. My friend used his spray on a pair of dogs chasing us last Tuesday. Stopped them in their tracks.
I've used a homemade variety of Tabasco and water in a water bottle, squirt them in the eyes with it and it'll stop them also. Just don't grab the wrong water bottle when you need a drink. I just haven't had much problem that couldn't be resolved by just talking sternly to them and keep pedalling. With four of them they get a bit more aggressive however, so in this case, I should have had some along. It cures them of chasing for a long, long time also.
Yes, most dogs, especially if alone, just like the chase, but I've had scary encounters with a very aggressive German shepherd once and another time with two pit bulls. A friend was knocked off his bike a couple years ago by an aggressive farm dog and his hip was broken.
We are hoping to get back on bikes for breakfast ride tomorrow, but forecasts are not encouraging. It's supposed to rain all day today, but hasn't started yet. A possibility of snow was also forecast for last night, but didn't happen.
