Security

While I was downtown Shawnee the other evening photographing the downtown area at night, I ran across this bike parked outside a Dollar General store. The first thing I noticed was the heavy locks and chains (none), the next thing I noticed was that people were walking by and not paying the least bit of attention to the bike. The third thing I have to say is that this is the norm around here......anywhere else?

LOL! That bike could be gone in a heart beat where I ride...

I usually use the tl system of locking to keep my bike safe and secure. That system entails locking the myself to the bike. While it is no guarantee that no one will try to steal the bike, it is still a good deterrent. LOL

Same around the Denver area.
If I'm going to be more than 20 ft. and/or out of sight of the bike, my ½" vinyl covered cable lock goes on. At least through the frame and, if I'm a little paranoid, through the front wheel as well.

I think you have a unique situation there, Riki.
(Or maybe people in larger cities are less trusting.)

It would be interesting to hear from other group members on the way things are where they live.

You know, in our area its kind of weird. People will go grocery shopping and to the laundromat and leave their stuff in the back of pickups, and you never see anyone mess with it....even in the Walmart parking lot with a bazillion people! Any bikes you see bikes out front of smaller places like coffee shops, convenient stores, etc, are generally just leaned up against the wall. But, anywhere else, they are locked up with big 'ol chains. I guess laundry is okay because you don't know if you are stealing someone's dirty laundry and have to wash it yourself. And, as for grocery stealing, well, guess even thieves have compassion.

Personally, I'm like Dick107 with my bike.

Bikes will get stolen in seconds in Minneapolis. Everyone has at least one lock and chain you have to lock bike seats. It could be 20 below zero here and people are still riding their bike. The policy is either take it in or lock it up.
I always carry a small chain and lock and make sure I can see my bike at all times.
I recently starting riding again but have always been aware of bike security.

"Luck of the draw".....the bike is probably OK 99% of the time, but it just takes one sociopath to walk by and take it. Locks are for protection from the 1% of bad people.

Photobike! Good to hear from you!
You haven't been around for a while. (unless I missed something.)
Sorry about the Vikings/PHX game last night.

I'm a Broncos fan but grew up in Wisconsin so with Brett now QBing for Minnesota I tend to follow the Vikings a little.

Dick's right, Photobike. Nice to hear from you.

Around here, in rural central Illinois, a bike's pretty safe. I still don't leave it unattended for long though. You never know. With drugs involved in most stealing (and small town America is no longer imune to the damage done by drugs), I hate to leave a bike out of my sight for very long. Isn't it a shame?

They cost too much money to take a chance. I never let mine out of my sight either.

I never take a lock or chain when I ride, but then I'm not parking it outside of the Mall of America. The places I stop at are the small restaurants or coffee shops and I try to leave it either in out of the way spots, or visible to everyone.
