Assault in the Heartland.....

Good afternoon family, that is what I consider those of you who are in this group. When I woke up this morning it was so terribly cold in the house that I tried to snuggle back under the covers. Hubby came in and asked if I would like to go have breakfast and buy an electric heater, now that we have "real" electric in our house. So I jumped up and got dressed and we headed out. We got to the end of the driveway and decided that we would go left, since we usually went to the right. We we driving along the dirt road, across the creek, up the hill and around a corner when we noticed a pickup sideways in the road. We pulled up and tooted once to let the guy know that he was blocking the way, the guy jumped out of his truck and grabbed a tire iron and headed toward us. So we backed up. And he kept coming, so we backed up some more. The idiot with the tire iron turned back toward the truck and yelled at his buddy to bring the truck. When he did that hubby slammed the van into drive and we sped past him and he hit our van with the tire iron putting a hole in the side of the van. We got to the truck and the guy was trying to block our way so we went into the ditch to get around him, then we got on to Hwy 135 and headed north and they followed us, trying to ruam us.

Luckily I had my cell phone and called the police, About a mile down the road they turned around and headed back toward Stover. We continued on and then got a call from the County Sheriff telling us we had to come back and they wanted our statements because they had caught the two guys, and they had a gun which made the charges Armed Assaulted.

I am shaking inside and have been since this happened this morning. I can not eat, my nerves are frazzled and oh I am having a really hard time get this off my mind. What am I supposed to do???

Talk it out with hubby and understand this is not a normal event so do not let it adversely affect your day to day life.

I have had similar incidences in my life but I am able to easily shrug these things off, might be a good thing...maybe not. I put myself in the position to handle any future violence of this nature. I armed myself so that I may better defend myself.

Now some will say this is asking for violence to happen, maybe so. But if those jokers decided to use their gun against you...what should you do? Of course you would drive off if you could...but bullets travel far and fast.

The choice of what to do is a personal one that requires one to search their soul and see if you are willing to off someone in order to save your own lives. The choice, for me, was an easy one.

I wish you good luck and hope you stay safe.

WhisperingEagle, what a horrible thing to have happen to you, or anyone. I'm so glad that you thought quickly and had the ability to get away from the situation. The unknown persons who will not meet this pair of deperados don't know how lucky they are. You have made me intensely curious about waht was going on so I hope to hear a follow-up.

As some may have noted, I recently applied for my lifetime carry permit. Poachers at the farm (and smash and grab in town) had a lot to do with that decision. I've never before felt that I might want need something for defense while I'm traveling. But my land is showing activity from 4-wheelers and there isn't anyone who has permission to use it for that. The neighbor up the road ran off two hunters last week. I don't know that I won't run into people who shouldn't be there and don't care who they hurt in getting away.

Besides being more long distance, a shotgun or a .45 makes more noise than a pool cue. If I have to defend myself, I want the neighbors to know about it so they can make a phone call. The ice scraper head thumper that might come in handy at the grocery store parking lot at 2am won't be the best tool for the job.

My very first thought was:

"Who the hell is this that he thinks he can attack my f******** car!! Where is that phone!" As I was reaching for my phone I was yelling at the guy, "butthead I am calling the cops!!" But the window was up and he probably could not hear me.

Road rage is no longer limited to California freeways.

I'm sorry this happened to you, WE. You cannot let this incident dictate the rest of your life. Its not easy sometimes but you'll have to figure a way to move beyond it.

In the meantime, I bet Bubba and Dufus have posted bail. Make sure you keep your doors and windows closed and locked (good thing winter has arrived). Be alert and aware.

I think that is the adrenalin rush that was talking, WE. But I'm smiling as I shake my head.

You see, my farm neighbor lives a quarter mile from me and acts as my eyes and ears while I'm in town. She was coming home from the doctor's last week when she saw a truck she didn't know about pull off into my field. She watched for a few minutes, thinking that maybe they were just turning around. When they climbed out in camos with guns, she went driving down there and gave them the third degree then ran them off.

I'm glad she did, and said.... "thank you very much. But next time, please just get a license plate number and call the DNR and the County Sheriff, okay?"

The good news is you both are OK and they caught those guys. Please keep us informed about how this case progresses.

I want to mention one thing; if you had a gun and tried to use it -- not only would it have resulted in someone injured or dead, you would be in jail along with those two. I don't know any state where vigilantism is legal. You did the right thing, get away and call the cops.

There is an old saying that I've found to be very true. Trouble is easy to get into and harder to get out of. I could suggest a few passive scenario's but I think you get the point already. Sorry you had to go through that. But you and your hubby are lucky that you got away unscathed. As far as the police not giving names I believe that is standard procedure. They have to investigate all the angles because basically without any other witnesses, it's your word against theirs. Sometimes the best offense is patience. Especially now while the economy sucks, and people are bad tempered. This morning just before I got off work I got yelled at, change thrown at me twice, and a lady complaining that I didn't give her the correct change before she realized she used a credit card. Not saying that my incidents were anywhere near as threatning as yours. Just that I see the frustration and ill manners daily. I suggest you take a deep breath and calm down before you cause yourself medical problems.
