The Bolter

This is an absolutely fascinating book! It's a true story by Frances Osobrne about her great-grandmother - Idina Sackville. She was known as the high priestess of the scandalous "Happy Valley Set". Married six times - left her two sons when the youngest was only three. She later had a daughter (Dinan) and successfully "mothered" two step children who adored her...Hollywood today has nothing on the lifestyle of the English elite during WW's l and ll. Much of the story takes place in Africa and the pictures throughout the book are amazing showing mansions that are not even seen today! Much of the book is based on letters and diaries and once you pick it up you won't want to put it down! Idina comes to life as a warm, loving, scandalous, exciting, sorrowful, irresponsible, hedonistic woman - both loved and hated by her peers.

Janefrances, thanks for the review. One of my favorite books is "Out Of Africa", and I believe some of the same characters may be mentioned in both books. I'll put it on my TBR list.

Picked this up at library today after a long wait. Am about 3/4 finished U. Must finish it tonight because after reading the first couple chapters of THE BOLTER I can't wait to dive into it! Fortunately it has a good pedigree chart in the preface which is most helpful in following Idina's marriages. Thanks, janefrances!

Added this to my TBR list. If this is similar to Out of Africa - one of my all time favorite books - you might also enjoy West With the Night. It's a very well written and captivating story of Beryl Markham, who was a contemporary of Isak Denisen - and - they shared a love of ...I can't recall his name right now... (played by Robert Redford who fit my image of him.) She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic but never really got credit for it because of something to do with her landing. An incredible life.

This was a super read!!! Many thanks to janefrances for recommending it. Never will I forget Idina Sackville. I liked her! This is one book I may buy in order to read again in leisure. The pedigree chart in the front of the book was quite useful. Frances Osborne was fortunate to gain access to many personal family journals and hand written letters. Sad to say, the hand written word is becoming a lost art. I've saved letters over my lifetime. They may never be read by others but are quite precious to me.
