Andersonville

In February of 1864, in Georgia, the infamous Andersonville Prison began operation. The camp became over populated very quickly and disease and death spread rampantly. The Confederacy was unable to provide the necessary essentials to sustain life for as many as 45,000 Union prisoners. Andersonville Prison was in exsistance for 14 months, when over 12,000 died from disease, overcrowding and exposure. They were buried in mass graves in trenches near the prison..

The Andersonville site is now home to a National Park with an emotional (to us vets anyway) tribute to POWs of all wars. Once a year there is a Re-enactment on the site with the nearby town of Andersonville having an event as well. I definitely place it on my list of "must see" Civil War sites.
