Supposedly, the American right believes in small government. Supposedly. Like everything else about the American right, that statement is a lie. They do believe in big government, bigger than the borders of the US.
The government of the US has created hundreds of governors across the world, from the Shah of Iran to Fidel Castro to Karzai. The problem is that once these men cease their courtship behavior and reveal their true selves, most, if not all, Americans are horrified and immediately withdraw their support.
The destruction of the Buddhas of Bamyan was a crime against humanity. However, is the invasion of one country by another also a crime against humanity? Is lying about the internal affairs of another nation -- as Condoleeza Rice and the rest of the bush cabal lied to Congress about Iraq -- a crime against humanity?
Barack Obama was elected to counter the crimes of the bush administration. He was feared by the right who saw him as the most consistently left-leaning person to serve in Senate although his former Harvard law instructor Charles Ogletree thought him a Republican during his student days.
It looks like Ogletree was right and the left that supported Obama was wrong.
This is a highly conservative administration, doomed to repeat the mistakes of the right, as far too many administrations have done. No one, I repeat no one, has ever had the courage or the ethics or the intelligence to govern from the left.
As for Obama, when your advisors are generals, their advice will be war.
