How do you all feel about the speech tonight?

I am seriously sad that more people are going to be sent to the war. I do like Obama's thoughtful approach, and his attempt at a time to wrap it up, but I feel very bad about escalating the war. :(

It is disappointing in the sense that more of our young men and women will be put directly in harm's way. Tonight I cried on my friend's shoulder. Nobody wants to end these wars to more than myself but drawing down a massive war machine that has been churning for 9 years (8 years with no direction or discipline at all) is not easy or simple but now will be executed with precision and thought in order to avoid a major global meltdown and the rise of extreme global terrorism. I believe that President Obama has made the correct decision because now everybody knows we will NOT be there until the end of time and we HAVE purchased our return ticket.
Sending 30,000 new troops was not what I wanted to hear either however 1.) 5,000 or so more were pledged by our allies .. Madame Secretarty Cinton will be traveling to Brussels on Friday to seek more ally reinforcements. I was grateful to hear they are becoming engaged once again in a unified global attack on extremeism. 2.) We now have a drawn down date, July 2011. 3.) President Obama has soundly rejected any notion of nation building in Afghanistan and made it very clear the only nation he is interesting in rebuilding is ours. 4.) Now the generals on the ground know what they have to do..that is to immediately begin to build up the Afghan army and how long they have until "mission accomplished for real this time".
Because of our President's willingness to show the world we offer a hand and not a closed fist, Russia has changed it's stance on sanctions for Iran. It is to be considered a thinly veiled warning to Iran that Russia's patience is waning and Iran should not rely on Russia to stop tougher world actions against them. That is HUGE! Ahmadinejad remains defiant and even went so far as to critize Russia's action..lol .. me thinks his days could be numbered.
The President has accomplished so much in making this world a better and safer world not only for us but for our children and granchildren as well. I just try stop and think about how much is on his plate. Change is not coming as fast as I would like but it is coming.

I made a decision when I first learned of Obama's intelligence and character, which was long before he was even a candidate - to support him. He took great strides to explain his position tonight. I continue to choose to support him for I still see no wavering of his intelligence or character. I do not support military action lightly. But sometimes, ... it has to be done.

It's a safe assumption that Obama knows much more about the situation than I do. I am disappointed though, not so much in him, but in the war strategies that have led us to this point.I was reading an article the other day view link about how our Generals had bin Laden all but in their sights and they decides to take a different course. Huh? Wasn't that the point of all this?

It took Bush & Co. 8 years of hard work to screw us into the ground, I suppose we will need to give Obama more than 11 months to unscrew us.

These posts say exactly what I feel. What would happen if we just left today? Obama didn't put us there & I believe if he were in charge then we never would have gone there but he is in a very tough spot following Gdubya's messes. It reminds me of Lyndon Johnson, who is remembered for a war he didn't start either. TeamOne..I do so love a great typo.

I think we are one thoughtful bunch, not prone to rashness, and it appears neither is our President! As painful as it appears for each of us to give any support to more war, I feel it must be much more painful for President Obama. Thus, I too support his decision for now. May he find wisdom at every turn!

We did not have much choice in 2001 but to go to war in Afghanistan. The Taliban would not allow us in to pursue Osama Bin Laden and we did need to pursue him as the mastermind criminal that he proved he was on 9-11-2001. I agree we have since royally screwed up the original mission and gotten ourselves into a situation that is killing more than we should be seeing die. But I do not not disagree with the original need for our presence there. Yes, I also think the Bush administration allowed him to escape by their policies and that we could have been in and out quickly if he had been captured. But now we have to make sure we have a sense of security that we will not see a rapid return to the previous state of politics and the use of the country as a training ground for those we want to continue such attacks around the world. I hope this surge can accomplish that. As i said elsewhere Pakistan is as great of a worry and I hope we make sure they are undermining our attempts in their country.

Seems like the same old crap from the Military.
They always say they know more facts than we do. Maybe WE the PEOPLE want to know the facts.
There are always a multitude of reasons they must keep killing and we just keep feeding this military machine til there is no more money left for the PEOPLE.
I'm not abandoning my support for Obama, but Geesh........when will the insanity stop? Finding the terrorists in Afghanistan, who had something to do with 911, is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I feel like we're being held hostage and paying the ransom money.........for a war that can't end. If we pay taxes this blood is on all our hands, just like we pulled the trigger ourselves. Killed are many non-warring people, including innocent children. If they find Bin Laden and his gang soon, they can get back to the business of taking care of the PEOPLE.
The act of war...
What seems strange to me is all the rightwing support for warring.......and killing....but their stance on abortion is a different thing....to them that's killing. Why can't they make up their minds? Are we becoming like them in not doing enough to end wars?

From what I see in online forums (too much of anyway) is that 'we the people' is too stupid to understand all the facts and their interrelationships. [I'm being facetious on purpose, but I also kind of mean it.]
