Using some characters from Tenchi (like Washu and Ryo-Ohki) but seemingly no relation to the Tenchi story this is a magical girl story. With references to lesbianism (like "Do us all a favor and get back in the closet!") it's hard to figure the target audience for Americans but that seems to be true of most anime which I suppose is why 4Kids butchered One Piece for TV.
First season is a bit cutsie but action picks up in the second season altho there were times I was saying "Huh?". Ah....3 out of 5. There are better series to watch for sure.

It's a good opening, I'd usually watch it instead of skipping thru it to the story like I do on many anime.

A little background on the girls:
Sasami Iwakura: Has powers of telekinesis. Her father, Ginji, is a native of the Magical World, with a status higher than Washu's.
Misao Shinohara (the dark haired girl): An introvert who can, whenever she gets scared, summon worm-like shadows around her.
Makoto Hozumi (the short, brown-haired girl): She has the ability to change her size. She is also in the habit of drinking large quantities of milk, in the hopes of growing bigger.
Tsukasa Takamine (the pink-haired girl): Emotionally detached, she has the ability to summon whirlwinds. Her late mother was originally from the Magical World, and her wealthy father is overly-protective of her because he fears that her powers would kill her, like he believes what happened to his wife.
Anri Misugi (the green-haired girl): In the habit of wearing black, goth clothing. Often draws and writes and has the ability to make them real. Lives with a very large family with her single mother and is a fangirl of Tsukasa.

I really liked Anri's power and would have liked to seen it developed more. Seems like it had great potential.
