Why these consistencies?

In southern France many hundreds of caves with drawings have been found.there seems to be a number of consistencies among the drawings on the caves.
The Paintings seem to have similar subject placement. Some commonality include:
1. Artists selected only a few of the species know to them;
2. Animals are constantly paired but in combination that would never exist - pairing of a horse with a mammoth, bison and a an ox.
3. Examples of the artist redrawing a new picture over an older one even if there is ample space,
4. At Lascaux no picture of reindeer, a major source of food in the area?

I read somewhere that evidence had been discovered that there were specialist artists who travelled from tribe to tribe doing these paintings for a fee . I will try to re-locate that info .

specialist artists that is so cool. they must have had enough food to fee the artist and some way to pay for his skills? A complex society at its roots.

pardon this that was a frigging great article. I saw a coy of this cave painting, southen spain. A woman in one hand is holding a horn from some animal her other hand is on her stomach looking quite pregnant standing under what lloked like the moon.
i asked what is it about the moon & fertility?, when did people pick that idea up?

Dirck: That link was most interesting, especially with the photos. Having a scientific background plus investigative experience of incidences subject potentially to judicial review, I, for one, try to keep an open mind and hear all sides of an issue before reaching a conclusion. Often enough, I've had to hear or read far-fetched or overly conservative opinions that had poor logical backup or reflected just a very closed mind. So, while open to new developments, I gingerly tread on these until further evidence crops up. E.g. there was a Discovery Channel program some years back that, through cave discoveries of skeletons and drawings, pointed to the possibilty of some Negroid aborigines reaching Brazil from Australasia over 40,000 yrs. ago, well before the Beringia Siberian immigrants, but being nearly driven out by the latter southward towards Tierra de Fuego where only a few inter-mixed remnants remained. Though repeated on TV, the last I heard was that the C14 readings were off by many yrs. but the fact remained: what of the forensic evidence of the skeletons? As I once mentioned, the original "Planet of the Apes" reflected well what the attitudes of people could be when faced with startingly new discoveries.

The following are links on the Brazil issue above, the last one or two being more reflective of the Discovery program:
