Message 997 of 1995

Greeting to all fellow Mac users.

Hello,
I started with a G4 iBook and OSX 10.3 (Panther) back a few years ago. This year I upgraded to an (intel) MacBook and 10.5 (Leopard). I was able to transfer everything that I absolutely needed, user files etc, from my iBook to my MacBook easily enough using Firewire and target mode. My iBook came preloaded with AppleWorks and also the World Book Encyclopedia. I really enjoyed using both. . . OSX 10.5 didn't come with either. I was able to drag a copy of AppleWorks from my iBook to my MacBook and it worked perfectly on my MacBook, which is a good thing, because I generated many documents with AppleWorks. But I wasn't able to figure out how to get The World Book Encyclopedia to work on my MacBook. It may or may not be possible, but I think it is, considering most of the old applications on my G4 iBook work on my intel MacBook. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas or opinions?
Thanks
earworms...

The G4 macs use an IBM PowerPC chip, which is not compatible with the Intel chip in the newer Macs. However, you should still be able to use that old encyclopedia and application by taking out the OS X 10.5 dvd and look for something called "Rosetta". It's a sort of a translation/compatibility encoder that permits older versions of stuff to run with the Intel Macs. It does, however, require some extra resources, like RAM....it can be a bit piggy that way.

But it's worth a try to see if it works for you.

Good luck and welcome to The Pack!

Let us know if this works for ya?

Yes, I already know this. I comprehend the difference between a PowerPC processors and INTEL processors, different architecture, different code.
My guess is that there are additional files that I need to pull over too. But I will try your suggestion.
I'm going to d a fresh install of Panther on my G4 and then the applications one at a time so that I can see all pertinent files easily. I really like the WorldBook Encyclopedia, lots of nice graphics. Updates are available by downloading them.
RAM on my MacBook isn't a problem so far. I only run one or two applications at a time anyway.
Thanks

I don't profess to know much about your challenge, earworms so here's a suggestion:t World Book might be available as a free download via the internet.

Not sure how lucky you'll be finding all the parts of the World Book on your Drive.

I'm not sure if Wikipedia would meet your needs - it is free, amazing, and a great resource. It deserves a try unless you are looking only for an off-line encyclopedia.

Not looking for luck, just success. I use WIKIPEDIA, all the time. But the WorldBook is content rich with videos and pictures. and I can use it when I'm off line. It has some beautiful screensavers too.

....which leads this visually obsessed member to the following question:

Screensavers? Screen Savers? Where? How do I find them?

I'm a wallpaper and screensaver junkie. Got the matrix dropping some of the time, and then I have helios rotating the other times....I get my wallpaper from google searches of "hd wallpaper for Mac", and from www.interfacelift.com

I'll be your BFF if you can get me a half dozen or so (free and intricate) good Mac screensavers! :)

Since I'm on a laptop, my screen probably doesn't need a screensaver.
The last screensaver I downloaded was from the Wallace and Grommit website. I think I downloaded something from Jack In The Box too.
The WorldBook Encyclopedia screensaver for my iBook had moving still photographs and moving picture videos floating across the screen. Famous faces, animals, places etc, it was enjoyable just to stop and look at.

Pete - I've used webshots.com because they have a huge collection of FREE nature views as well as modern, futuristic graphics.

Kythera, do you know what the Antikythera mechanism is? I do.
But I'm not sure if it was a PC or a Mac! Ha. :o)
