Is a Party Litmus Test the way to go?

Republicans have a proposal for a litmus test for Party funding of candidates:

While this will provide a consistent message, will it prevent the Republican Party from adapting to its defeat? Is doubling down on the policies the party espoused on it's way down the right thing to do?

The Republicans credit the Contract With America for putting them in power in the 1994 cycle, so they believe that lists make a difference. Even if lists can make a difference, will this list make a difference? Will it make the right kind of difference?

The Democratic Party didn't create a litmus test as a way to regain the majority, it broadened it's appeal to moderate voters. Rather than insuring that the tent only included true believers, they flexed their policy and message to make the ideological tent bigger. Democrats reached out to moderate and slightly Conservative candidates in order to regain the majority.

And the current President is not making any bold moves in policy. Even health care is more a product of the Congressional Democrats than the WH. That's why Liberals like myself are sometimes sidelining ourselves; we don't think that this Congress and this President are doing what needs to be done.

So perhaps making the tent bigger has its own issues?

Polls show some points of the litmus test are against popular opinion.

Some of these points are far right (Conservative) to ultra right (TeaBagger) and according to national polls do not represent mainstream America. They may excite the base but I think they have just given their opponents a tool/weapon to win national elections.

They already lost 2006 and 2008; they want more? It wasn't just because of Bush that they lost the elections, it was because of what Republicans like Bush and Cheney and Palin stand for. I don't think this litmus test will sway many Independents...

But the lack of dynamic action by Democrats (in a word: moderation) isn't very inspirational, is it?

while we're in the same very narrow beamd economic boat lack of dynamic action may be appreciated.

Metaphors sound neat, but they can obscure the detail of an issue as well as enlighten.

Please explain how the current global Great Recession resembles a "very narrow beamd economic boat".

The litmus test seems to be making the GOP narrower than inclusive. There is no wiggle room for moderates who believe in individual rights such as a woman's right to choose and health care...

TwoSpirits,

L^3 pointed out the ramifications: moderates can see the Republican Party drive out candidates who hold their views; why should moderates expect the Republican Party to represent them?

The Dear Leader, Ronald Reagan, would have failed the "Purity Test"?

Let them have at it! It will mean sure defeat!

Good question, but we are still only a two party system and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

A recent poll is very revealing on the division within the GOP: view link

We started out with NO Parties, then we had three (3) then back to two…Then again at the last turn of the 19th century we had three again…Bull Moose Party…then back to two again where it pretty much stayed…Until that get under the hood guy ran…LOL Now its still only 2...We do need a strong third party,,,
