Mark Twain

Mark Twain
(Nov. 30, 1835 - April 23, 1910)

Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Mark Twain was said by Ernest Hemingway to be "the first truly American writer." His hometown of Hannibal, Missouri supplied him with a great deal of material for his work. Besides his novels about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, he wrote many stort stories about life on the Mississippi River, as well as political and philosophical writings on the state of humanity. The legend of him "coming in" and "going out" with Halley's Comet is mostly true -- the comet was visible within approximately two weeks of both his birth and death.

What a good writer and an interesting individual he was Caredoe. My Dad used to tell me he saw Hallley' comet also when he was 12 years old and again when he was 87. dies at 98. How lucky they both were.

I agree with Hemmingway, a true American writer concerned with Americans and American themes. As American as the Beach Boys or the Band. I visited Hannibal when I was nine. It was the first river I'd seen that I couldn't see across. (the Colorado is a stream in comparison) Just seeing the river there makes you want to "lite out' for somewhere else.
