Thanksgiving 1966

A cold rainy day at ChuLai and I was looking forward to a turkey dinner.I was on duty in the 7th Marines COC and my relief came in very late by the time I got to the mess they had substituted hotdogs for turkey and the potatos were cold and the mess tent was a mess with spills and wet Marines in their panchos trying to eat. I dumped the slop into tha garbage can ,washed my mess kit and returned to my tent feeling sorry for myself and cursing the guy who releived me late.
Well looking back I can now see how lucky I was for not being out on an operation and sloshing around in some God forsaken rice paddy on some unspecified and unnecessary mission To day I wish the best to all who have served and to those who serve today.

Thanks for sharing your memories, mgysgt.

It made me try to remember Thanksgiving when I was there, but I can't.
But just before Christmas 1970 my wife lost a baby at birth, so I came home on emergency leave. Thought I'd freeze on the midnight tarmac in San Francisco. Each year I think I get better at understanding the true meaning of these holidays. It takes a lot of practice.

Happy holidays to all of you

I remember my first thanksgiving there, our commander said all of his men was going to have turkey for thanksgiving dinner. Here comes the chopper with dinner, c-rat canned turkey! Musta been the thought that counts.
