A Christmas Of Sharing

California Blonde made a comment in another post about her patients that have very little and sometimes nothing at all. No matter where you live,in the U.S. or in a different country, need still exists. We as a group can make a contribution to better circumstances for people with nothing wherever we are.

I would like to start Small Homes Christmas of Sharing. Tell us about your local charities. Let us know what you are donating and where it is going. Share suggestions of ways we can all make things easier for somebody else.

Finding a way to make somebody else's life better makes your life better too.

My daughter's work is having a food bank donation contest. The site is divided into teams and they are each trying to bring more food that the other teams. It is fun and an excellent cause at the same time.

Last year everybody brought a jacket or coat to be given away.

What does(or did if you are retired) your work do?

I am partial to the local Salvation Army. I think they do good work and have heard that they take very little from each donation for administrative costs.

Where I worked before I retired they had a big holiday meal for the employees at lunch time. They gave us extra paid "off" time that day. It cost $3.00 or 3 non perishable food items. Most people donated more. The proceeds all went to a local food bank. You could choose to not participate but hardly anyone did that. The meal, by the way, was delicious.

They also had "wish" trees for children with names and wished for items on a card you took off - then you brought in the item - wrapped with the child's name on a tag and put it under the tree.

I agree with you eecgeorgia, I donate a lot of stuff to the Salvation Army also. They are my charity of choice. I am a big reader and donate my books through out the year, after I am done with them to SA. Most of my usable stuff goes to them.
For children, our local firehouses take toy donations.

At work we adopt a family every year through the Cleveland Housing Network. They give background on families that are struggling and what is on their wish list. This year we adopted a mother and two sons. Today, I went out and bought her a cookware set, a dish set and a beverage set. Others are giving books, bath towels, and gift certificates. I am very blessed and this gives me a chance to share those blessings with others. I also give to the Salvation Army, The City Mission, and the Animal Protective League. I am so grateful to all these organizations and the help they give.

Great idea. Some ideas on what kids want would help me a lot. Angel trees are big where I live. As long as it is a local charity that I know is doing good deeds, I take a name tag from each tree.

What do kids WANT for Christmas. Kids eyes light up at a special gift...something they just want. Got any ideas?

And please, save a few dollars for an animal charity if you can. Need ideas on good ones...just ask!!!

I am giving money to the local rescue mission: $1.92 per person will provide a complete turkey dinner, with all the trimmings.

My grocery store is collecting gently-used coats and I have some to drop off there.

The Food Bank is accepting donations of non-perishable food items, and I always give to them, too.

And Horsey, just for you: the local SPCA accepts donations of bags of dog food and cat food, so they can feed the animals left abandoned.

What about the elderly?

When I was Community Chairperson for my town's Girl Scouts, they would make a wreath for each door and sing in the local care homes and hospital where allowed.

Part of the Girl Scout experience is the need to give to others. What do your local non-profits do for the season?

Salvation Army has a dinner. The Angel trees. What else?

I like to give to Salvation Army and DAV Disabled American Vets. There are also a few nursing homes where i would like to visit.

For my great nieces 16th birthday last month she asked that no presents be bought for her but food and money donations be made to a local animal shelter where she volunteers. I thought that was great thing for a teen to do!

I do the DAV as my hubby is a vet also if I see someone who mite need help I buy a little extra especially if there is kids involved. I dont have much money etc as we are on SS with less than we need to just get along. I gladdly give up some of the things I would get myself to help someone else less fortunate.

cloudyblue posted this in another group and said to pass it on so I copied it for you to use.

When doing your Christmas cards, address one to : A Recovering American Soldier c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center 6900 Georgia Avenue NW; Washington, D.C. 20307. If we pass this on, think of how many cards these wonderful special people would get. PASS THIS ON...
