So What Have You Watched Lately?

Saw an interesting horror flick with Malcolm McDowell the other night, called "Island Of The Dead" (2000) -- set on Hart Island, where the unclaimed dead of New York are buried in mass graves. McDowell is a developer who wants to use the island as a "city" for homeless people who'll be paid subjects of nasty medical research. One problem: seems the island has evolved its own brand of flies and maggots that have gotten used to eating human flesh. After the "groundbreaking," Malcolm and some cops and a small convict work crew get marooned there overnight. The movie seemed a lot more plausible than it sounds -- very creepy.

Despite what it says on the DVD cover above, the havoc had nothing to do with them disturbing the dead, though they did that – it was more from the “It’s Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature!” genre. It got viciously bad reviews, but I enjoyed it.

One thing that didn’t make sense: toward the end, Malcolm gleefully blows up a building for no apparent reason. I guess some directors think every movie needs an explosion.

It’s not to be confused, of course, with the recent George Romero zombie sequel with the same title.

So what have you watched lately?

I have been watching the Sci-Fi marathon of James Bond movies.

We came across that last night while we were totally pigging out. My son was perplexed as to why the Sci-Fi channel was running a James Bond marathon. Was it because of the gadgets? That's a bit of a stretch, don'tcha think?

Not as much of a stretch as wrestling, but yeah. At least Christopher Lee is in "The Man With The Golden Gun."

Anyone ever see Epoch?

I had dinner with the writer yesterday. He threatened to send me the original screenplay so I can see how much differently the final movie was.

It was made for Sci-Fi channel (I think) in 2000. Starred David Keith and Ryan Oneal.
I'd rented it several years ago. It's not bad.

I've often wondered about that. Fiction, certainly; science, not so much.

'Course, neither are zombies and vampires when you really analyze the premises. :-)

I must confess to the guilty pleasures of seeing what kind of gadgets and science fiction type of stuff that they would come up with, especially with the cars.

I confess I've watched the beginnings of two of them just to hear pop divas sing the theme songs. Boy, am I gay!
