real purpose of thanksgiving

As thanksgiving is tomorrow I tend to think of A. Lincoln who proclaimed it a national day to offer thanks, 1863 to the "national unity and to apologize for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony," I wonder if the thought of thanksgiving was just easier to be with the pilgrims and Indians then with the 7 years of killing each other

I think human psychology tends to glean over the darker side of an event. After all, the year before in a compromise, Lincoln ordered the largest mass execution in American history, 38 out of an original 303 Santee Sioux defendants, to allow the state of Minnesota to obtain the land of the Santee without compensation and drive them out of the state.

Yes, I see no gratitude towards the native Americans then or now.

Don't know what 7 years you are referring to , Yichel . The Civil War was "only " 4 years long , and in 1863 had only been going on for 2 years .I tend to think that Lincoln is one of our most over-rated presidents .

Thanks, Dirck. I was wondering to what the "7 years" was referring.

Everytime I think of Thanksgiving with the Indians rescuing starving pilgrims at Plymouth Rock with pumpkins, corn and meat, you know...those pictures we see in grade school in 'history' books, I think...."what a bunch of muggins". They should have scalped that lot of Calvinists and been done with it. Wouldn't have been the first settlement to have disappeared.

No one is perfect. It's just a matter of one's overall net contribution. The same might be true of underrated ones. People go overboard in rating them, no matter how intellectual they are; there's gut feelings involved and personal biases.

E.g. FDR ordered Japanese-Americans to be interred in camps; populist Andy Jackson defied the Supreme Court by ordering the Trail of Tears for Cherokees and other tribes; Hoover brought in the first VP of Indian blood; Nixon opened up Red China; Kennedy had various extra-marital affairs; Truman, the haberdasher, ended the war with Japan and initiated the successful Marshall Plan against Communists.
