Pictures going dark

I know I have heard that you loose some clarity of your picture when they are opened in JPG. but for years,I never noticed much change and just figured they were at that rate going to out last me anyway. Now, every time I bring up a page of my very nice bird photos or anything else, even recent ones, they are all darkened some to the point that they have to be lightened (Enhanced) to just see them at all. After several go arounds with the same photos, turning dark, I am wondering what the hey! And how do i avoid this happening to my photos. I had noticed several months ago that i could not open them from my camera with any program I have except photoshop, and it is not very good for the sorting etc. . But if i opened them in for instance Windows photo Gallery, they are mostly too dark and if i tweak them to make them the proper lightness for viewing, then when I take them to photoshop elements, they are blown out. Too light! So, I have been using photoshop for sorting and they seemed to be fine for viewing and sending on the internet etc. Now, all my photos seem to be going South so to speak. Any clues?

I'm 99% sure I know your problem. Please send me a private message so I can give you my real email and you can send me a couple of the pictures.
I also need to know if you have a CRT or an LCD monitor.
I've done serious digital printing since it came out and, when I was using a CRT it drove me nuts after a while. The colors looked fine on the screen and awful on the print.
To avoid that you have to calibrate the monitor.
Devices to do that range from about $79 to $400.
You might get a good deal as everybody is having crazy sales.
It may also be that the monitor is sick. Once I know what you have and see the pictures I'll have a better idea.

Just one comment: jpeg files don't lose quality just opening and viewing them. They gain artifacts when they are saved. So if you open a photo and make no changes requiring you to save the file, there is no loss of quality.

Good call, CB and TJ.......it's not the digital data of the picture file itself; rather, its the medium that the data is being presented to the viewer through, whether that be paper or CRT or LCD......

Mary - Cathbad will be able to help you.......he's been down this road before!

First off, my camera club just purchased a Spyder for calibrating the monitor. I have not gotten a chance to use it yet. So that will open one avenue for me to pursue. I just got an Epson 2280 monitor a few months ago. at first the prints looked like mud, but with some tinkering and i am not sure just what tinkering, my prints come out beautiful....but That is when, a short time later, I realized i could not use anything but my photoshop E5 program for seeing, sorting , etc, as the color was dark. I thought there might be a connection there. My computer and monitor are a little over a year old, Dell, flat screen, so am i to infer from that that it is LCD? I looked through my books with it and they give no clues to anything I plugged my Question into google and sorted out the old fat vs new flat, screen but then There were other people's questions, Like not being able to reboot, and Analog input detected... I've had problems with that too sometimes, and it mentioned a resolution problem.
after i had just quit trying to restart, shut down, turn off power supply, everything i could think of, then i walk away and 20 minutes later it comes back up as if there were no problem. That may be a separate issue, or may give you a clue? who knows? I will look for a couple of pictures to send. Mary
