I lost sound on two different pc, one a desktop e- machine, that is really a Gateway, I replaced the sound card in it.
The second one a Toshiba laptop, I reloaded the factory sound software from the back up disk #2, that I made.
Both are on Vista.
I'd try the second option first, much cheaper and worked..
You might try a solution I used a couple times. Go to the device manager and delete the sound card. Once done, restart the computer and allow the Operating system to "find" it again...worked twice for me.
Thanks for the help. Will let you know how and if it works.
TheRifle,
There could be any one of a dozen causes for loss of sound. What kind of system are you using? How did you find out what drivers to update? If you have a separate sound board your speakers would be plugged into it. You can unplug the power cord and remove the left panel of the computer and see where they plug in. Most PCs nowadays have onboard sound chips so there may not be any sound board to replace. I would first start by eliminating the speakers and cabling. Start up your favorite songs and remove the speaker cable and replace it with a couple of cheap ear buds. If you get nothing (make sure your using the speaker out jack) next do as Wolfie suggested. If you find that there is sound from the output jack in the headphones the next thing to check is the power connection for your speakers. You would be surprised how many times I have found things disconnected from behind the computer. The cat keeps playing with the cords behind my grand daughter’s computer. If none of these things help, you might consider using a USB sound device.
