Trosky Castle ruin at sunset

I finally got a chance to do a little traveling this past weekend (school was closed for repairs Mon. & Tues., so I rented a car and hit the road). I went to Jelenia Gora, Poland yesterday and managed to catch the sunset on my way home. In the distance is the Trosky Castle ruin. Its towers were built on top of two existing rocks. It is the most famous and recognizable landmark in the 'Cesky raj' region (Czech Paradise), and the legend associated with the two towers is a pretty good one.

Gorgeous sunset!!! The castle ruin silhouetted in the sky is very pretty. I'm sure there are stories and legends galore about the castle... I've always been fascinated with castles.

Got time to tell us the legend you're referring to?

I'd like to know about that legend also! This image is certainly evocative. However, I would not have guessed that I was looking at a structure whenI first looked at this photograph. The outline of the building looks like part of a natural landscape. What initially grabbed my attention was the color and then the varying shades of shadows from the tree to the landscape and up to the clouds.

OK, Trosky Castle legend: The west tower is called "Baba" (The Crone), and the east tower is "Panna" (The Maiden or The Virgin). Baba had a son who married Panna. Baba was very jealous of Panna and wanted her dead. So, shortly after the son went off to war, Baba told Panna that he had been killed in battle. Panna was so distraught that she threw herself off the tower and died. I don't know what happened after that.

The towers were built on top of existing basalt rocks, which is why it looks like part of the natural landscape from this distance and low light.
