Thanksgiving week

So many folks are busy getting ready for the holiday, with family coming in & cleaning, shopping, cooking to get done. We won't have a challenge for the rest of this week, but of course I'm still going to encourage you to take pictures! Photobucket Uploader Firefox Extension, camera It'd be really neat to see the traditions of families in different parts of the country.

Everyone is welcome to post as many pictures as you want of any subject you take this week: you or your spouse shopping at the grocery store; looking like Julia Childs cooking amidst a kitchen explosion of dirty dishes, pots & pans; frantic cleaning &/or decorating; your family crowding around with kids running crazy, the dog barking & the cat hiding; sitting around in a post-turkey coma watching the game; & most especially all the yummy food!

LOL! Theta, I think we've all experienced that at one point or another. I survived yesterday, but will have to rest today :-)

Our family tradition, for a long time, was to get up early and go downtown to see the Thanksgiving Day Parade. I'd put the turkey in the oven before leaving, and it'd be just about done when we returned home. We hadn't been to the parade in a few years and decided to go this year, even though I've moved further from downtown Houston. It was a very pleasant trip and was enjoyed by all.

My oldest daughter and granddaughter weren't able to be with us this year, but my three others provided much laughter...

I did get a nap in, and was up in time to watch some football. We do things a little different from most, but we have a genuine good time when we all get together.

Looks like you had a great time with your family, and even got to go to a parade!

We had our usual family dinner & I even managed to be cordial & well-behaved with my ex there, lol! Since it was at my older son's home, I didn't have a lot of food to deal with. We've already eaten all our leftovers :-( I do still have some turkey broth so will be making a pot of soup today -- it'll be pretty good with the colder weather we're finally having.

Here are my yeast rolls, with accompanying recipe. One thing I learned is you can't take successive pictures with flour & dough all over your hands, lol!

No such thing as too much butter

Here's the recipe if anyone wants to try it -- it's pretty easy! Submitted by Mrs. William E. Baker to the very first Pillsbury Bake-off Contest in 1949, & it was a winner.

Old Plantation Rolls
Makes 2 dozen

5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1 cup water
1 cup milk
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg, lightly beaten

Grease a 13x9 baking pan. In a large bowl combine *3* cups flour with the rest of the dry ingredients & blend well. In a small saucepan, heat water, milk & shortening until very warm, 120 to 125 degrees. Add warm liquid & egg to flour mixture. Mix at low speed til moistened, then beat for 3 minutes at medium speed. By hand, stir in remaining 2 to 3 cups of flour 1/2 cup at a time, just enough to form a stiff dough. Cover loosely with greased plastic wrap & a cloth towel. Let rise in a warm place (80 to 85 degrees) for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.

Punch dough down to remove all air bubbles. ☆ On a well-floured surface with floured hands, toss dough & knead lightly for a few minutes, just until no longer sticky. Divide into 24 equal pieces & shape each into a ball. Place into baking pan. Cover with greased plastic wrap & cloth towel again; let rise in a warm place for 35 to 45 minutes, until doubled in size.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Uncover the rolls & bake on center rack for 13 to 15 minutes, until golden brown. Immediately turn rolls out onto rack to cool.

☆ Rolls can be prepared to this point, covered & refrigerated overnight. Increase second rise time to about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.

* High altitude, above 3,500 ft: no changes.

Thanks for the recipe, Sylk. I love baking breads, etc.
Our younger son and his wife hosted dinner this year. On the way to pick up my mother, we saw this car in front of us. It's a Lotus V8 and is worth about $250,000!!!

The table included an extra setting for those who weren't there.

Sylk - that pic of the roll looks scrumptious! I don't have much luck with yeast.
