At Home, with us

My wife and I live on a nice piece of property just to the north of The Great Smoky Mountains, My fenced-in back yard is probably an acre and a half, my side yard or the immediate unfenced area around our house is probably just as big but not quite as symmetrical as the back. Now I've told you that to tell you this; My big Yellow Lab, "Boomer", is approaching Twelve years old. Boomer and I have been around the country together as he used to accompany me when I drove a semi coast to coast, we have a few good stories to tell and I was glad for the company and the laughs. We were fortunate enough to have a friend in the Labrador business when we started and we were able to get some really great bloodlines to begin with, and over the years Have found and had some Labs who were pure instinct, some were little people masquerading as a dog, some were very smart while others were dumb as a sack of rocks. Boomer is the person in disguise. Anyway, while out in the yard in early 2003 I patted Boomer on his hip and he yelped, this scared the beegeebees out of me because this is a certified Therapy Dog and he has never showed any aggression and has be the kindest most amiable dog anyone could hope for. He has of course, since his arrival on our place worked his way into being THE house dog and he knows he deserves it! Know what I mean ?! Anyway this scared me and we took him to the Vet and was told he had Discospondylosis, a condition where there is a calcification that grows over the discs of the vertebrae and pretty much fuses the backbone together. When I was told this I informed the vet that at this time having him "put down", is not an option. The vet prescribed a pain medication called Dermax, which is fairly expensive and over a period of time can cause Liver damage. My wife and I decided that if it kept him around for a couple of years it would be worth it, cause the other option, well, wasn't an option. And if the condition was going to cause us to go that way later anyway. That was 6 years ago, we quit giving the Dermax to boomer after a month or so strictly because we couldn't afford it and replaced it with Doans pills. They seem to give him some relief. And he does get up and move around, not as much, but he still does, he doesn't cry in pain, and he gets his fair share of cuddles I assure you, If he knew what a papoose bag was I would never get any rest. I earlier talked about the size of my yard, I let Boo out in the unfenced area on occasion so he can check his P-mail and I will keep a random eye on him from the house. Now its 20 feet from my back door to the door between my Den and Kitchen, for a dog in his condition, by the time I cover the 20 feet, he has zipped to the other side of the yard. How does he do that ?! There have been a lot of Labs in my life, and quite a few I wished I had never adopted out. But if I would have kept them all, I'd have so many it would look like a field the size of an old Bison herd. This one, when the time comes, is going to be especially hard. But, well Christmas is coming, maybe, lets see, where did I see that papoose bag...hmmm.

What you've described is probably a picture of what the near-future holds for Chaos, our boxer friend. He's 6.5 already, and boxers are not known for longevity. As I've already been warned, they don't stick around long, and when they leave, they'll rip the heart right out of your chest.

Last year, I had to have put down a dog who was my constant companion for seventeen years. She was a street mongrel who'd I'd seen scrounging food off the side of a main thoroughfare through town. I watched as each day she got skinnier and skinnier. One day, as I drove up to my office, there she was, looking lost. I got out, crouched down, put my hand out, and she threw herself into my arms. Once you have 'em so close they can lick your face, you cannot put them down and pretend it never happened.

So I had that one dog, and I wasn't actually in the market for another doggie friend, but my boarder colluded with my wife, and suddenly I had a boxer pup crawling up into my lap and going to sleep. What's a guy to do?

Chaos and Martha-dog got along pretty well, considering their age difference, and he missed her when she checked out. Went looking ever so often to see if she'd made it back from wherever she went. Bummer.

The one thing our dogs have done for us each and every Christmas morning for the last seventeen years is make used Christmas paper into ever small pieces. We open our presents, remove anything that could be a problem for them, then let them go to town on the paper. It may well be the best part of the day, watching their absolute joy in ripping paper. This year, we're down to one dog again, but I'm thinking he'll be up to the task. He's no quitter.

Aren't dogs great! I have 2 right now, I have always had a dog. When it comes time to say goodbye to them, it does feel like your heart is being ripped out! After I lost the last one, I swore no more, would I go through that pain! When my nephew brought this little tiny puppy in and set it in my floor, the puppy ran right to me! Yep, he was a keeper! I could not refuse! My hound is going on 13 now, arthritis has her moving so slow some days. But she always goes for her morning run and you can hear her voice echo up and down the hollers! I too, have often wondered how does she do that, when just a few minutes before I had to wait for her to slowly get up for me to open the door?

My other dog is a rat (terror) terrier! He is going on 5 year old, thinks he is the boss. I had to call in a trainer for this one! Trainer told me no problem, I will have him minding in no time (I thought, I bet you do) Well she did. Best money I ever spent.

Zeartan it is so good to hear about you and your dogs. Boomer sounds like a very exceptional dog. They sure can melt your heart and also break it to pieces when they leave us. Thanks so much for sharing a part of your world with us.

These stories of the wonderful, pet friends were so touching. I am so happy that you all shared them with others of us. Zeartan, Boomer sounds like the best and lucky to have you as you are to have him. Sorry about the loss of Martha, Wurdguy. I know that losing a pet can make a heart heavy. I love this kind of sharing.
