Getting old

Moondancerinred gave us the quote to think about 'we get old and stop playing-we stop playing and get old'.

Whether board games with others or computer games by ourselves or group games, these activities are one form of playing. They take us away from ourselves. They give us mini-vacations. They are therapy. We rest our minds. We communicate with others and we interact (even if the other is a computer). They rejuvenate us.

When we get old and stop playing, the years of living suffocate us. Our old worries, our new worries or even our total concentration with the present, past or future are all centered within. Even if we are thining of others, we mainly thinking on how to help them, or how they are affecting us.

There is an exception: true prayer, a communication with God. Here it is not play, but has the same benefits of play. We feel lighter and more rested.

Reading is my escape. When I used to play board game I would tire of them quickly. I don't play computer games. If you can call it a game I enjoy doing the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzle.

exercise for those who can, like walking is both good for the body and soul as is meditation, I think and as you said prayer..I used to love to play cards with a group of friends and would love to do that again.

One of my favorite things to do is play vicariously by watching children play...I've always been more of an observer than a joiner and I can feel their creativity flowing and their emotions exercising and their little muscles growing and I feel like a part of it.

Yes, I like the walking part & meditate as well. Getting out into nature. And, of course, a sense of humor helps me. I do so enjoy reading as well. It's a great escape!

I'd much rather play board or card games with visitors than turn on the TV. I don't like going to someone's house where the norm is to have the TV on or they're involved in some computer game. I do play Mah Jongg on the computer in the evenings sometimes, but definitely not when someone is here. I don't consider reading to be play. Playing with the dogs outside is great fun, and they always make me laugh out loud! I really need to focus on more physical exercise like walking in nature; I don't know why I am so resistant to doing something enjoyable and usually seem to find an excuse not to!

The only game I take seriously is chess, against humans or machines. The number of possible moves in any one chess game is greater than the known number of particles in the universe. Other games get old after a while, but chess never does.

In school and the military I was a regular at the pinball table. I got really good at it right about the time pinball became obsolete.

Being involved in life, exercising, travel, stretching my boundaries and surprising myself (usually for the good :-) are what keep me in the proper frame-of-mind. Being old can happen at any age if we let it. I'm not gonna' go willingly.

I'm reading a book about a gal who graduated from NYU in drama and during the Christmas holidays took a job at FAO Schwartz demonstrating and selling toys. The Lee Middleton dolls were put in an incubator and the "mommy" was a kid from 5 to 10 who had to be interviewed for adoption of the doll. Most of the little girls were pretty docile when actors posing as "nurses" would ask the questions. The questions were "Will you love and take care of the baby? Will you read to her? Will you change her diaper? What will you name the baby? One kid answered no to all the questions, the actor teased her and said "you'll have a stinky baby if you don't change her diaper." the last question was that she would name the baby "Stupid." The gimmick was the adoption fee (wink wink) was $120. Problems arose when the store ran out of white babies, and only Asian, Hispanic and Black babies were available. The moms weren't interested in adopting any of these, saying "They don't look like my Susan." The comment the "nurse" thought would be appropriate was did these women think people would believe Juan knocked her kid up?" Of course she didn't say this if she wanted to keep her job.

Some of the things retailers will do to sell toys, huh?

Growing old and growing up are both very bad for you, so I refuse to do either!
