18th Century Photo Shoot
One of my recent “commissions” was to shoot some publicity photos for a local historic site called Pottsgrove Manor. They always have a “Candlelight Tour” event in December, and they needed some stuff for advertising and newspaper articles. They brought in a bunch of period reenactors in costume, and me with my camera.
They wanted to do this in the dark, or at least without daylight streaming through the windows, to advertise the candlelight-tour thing, so that meant using flash. The problem is that we don’t want this looking too artificial, however. I had to warm the color balance some, because flash is very “blue”, and we want the more orange glow reminiscent of candlelight. I also added some heavy vignette, or darkening around the edges to help get the intimate candlelight mood going too. On the other hand, shooting with real candlelight would have made this way too dark. On the whole, I’m rather pleased with the results. Here are 2 images from the set.
