My mom always makes cheese grits and it's absolutely a requirement for our family's Thanksgiving meal.
Also, about five years ago I got this recipe for Pumpkin Dump Cake. Now everyone expects it on Thanksgiving, even though we have traditional pumpkin pie as well. Sometimes I make it for Christmas too -- it's great for buffet style serving. It's easy and yummy.
Pumpkin Dump Cake
1 29 oz. canned pure pumpkin
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
2 or 3 tsp cinnamon
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup melted butter or margerine
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix first 6 ingredients until well blended.
Pour batter into 9" x 13" greased pan.
Sprinkle cake mix on top.
Cover with pecans.
Pour melted butter over top.
Bake 50 minutes.
Top with whiipped cream if desired.
Hey! That sounds good, ajiji! I think I may have to try making that.
We don't really have any traditions. Neither of my kids will eat ham & my daughter isn't crazy about turkey (she swears she's never eaten one that wasn't "dry"!) They would rather have Mexican food. Or, if I'm doing the cooking & ask for a request they'll frequently ask for my chicken 'n dumplins.
Ahh... chicken 'n dumplins... that brings back memories for me. My ex-husband didn't often cook, but the man could sure whip up some mean chicken 'n dumplins! Kinda makes me miss him a bit, especially since he took his recipe with him!
ajijicchic,
fwiw, i can SEND you a good recipe for chicken & dumplins. = my Great-aunt Leila's recipe will cure any need for your EX.
(CHUCKLE!)
yours, Otter
YES, Otter please send it! Or post it here if you want to. (Hate those amnesia moments when I pine for the old days....)
ajijicchic;all,
i'm not at home today but i will get my book of her recipes out & post it here soon. - you're not the only person who asked me.
fwiw, my Great-aunt Leila was the daughter of one of the women in our family, who was one of "the refugees" on "The Escape from Mississippi" (to Texas, as a 15YO bride, in 1865-6) & Aunt Leila told "us kids of the '50s" fascinating tales (that she had heard from her mother/grandmother) about escaping the cruel/vengeful Yankee army "in the winter of '65".
reference EXes =======> "to my EX: 'Tis well writ, you think your wonderful & i can't live without you. truth is, you ain't worth spit."
(i HAD to post the above - the devil made me do it.= chuckle.)
youirs, Otter
Sounds good, Otter. And TooYoung, if you want to post your recipe I'd love to have it too.
And yes, I'm sure we could have an entire thread on exes, and it would probably be quite entertaining, hehe. (Don't get me started...)
ajijicchic,
i'm sure we could = chuckle.
