DARE I ask in NHB, for what are YOU thankful?

Will you be celebrating Thanksgiving? What's it mean to you? Why are you thankful?

My son, my food, my shelter, my health, my friends, my aunt, my life, and my ability to laugh out loud at it all

You may indeed ask.

I'm thankful for having family and friends who love me despite my flaws and put forth the effort to keep in touch regardless of the many, many miles between us in some cases.

I'm thankful for having had parents that raised me up in such a way that I can look into the bathroom mirror every morning with few regrets for past behaviors and much excitement about the potential for a new day.

I'm thankful for not having to live in fear. I do my best to put good karma out there, and thus far karma has been very kind in return.

Gosh Veggie, the list is endless........but every single thing on it will point to the same baseline. I'm grateful that I know a sense of gratitude for what is will always override being pissed off over what isn't. That right there is the key to living a happy life.

I am thankful that my nephew met my goal for him: he has grown up to be a good man, a good husband and a good father. What more could you ask?

I am grateful that my knees still bend a little, that my new meds stop my feet from becoming balloons and that my doc accepts that the purine diet is too weird for words (no oats, no tomatoes, no fruit - too weird. The small oily fish thing wasn't a deal breaker - I don't do them nor organ meats - until they put me on fish oil capsules which, guess what!, are made from small, oily fish.)

I am grateful that the boys down the block put a flier in my door about raking leaves and then did a very good job for $12pmh. I am grateful my landlord sent over one of his drinking buddies to do the gutters. I am grateful rent-a-Belgian cleaned my porch and my garage and hung the porch light (which my landlord promised to do - hey, I bought it! - eight years ago!) I am grateful Tom drives the twenty from his house to mine to mow (but I wish he wouldn't use the big tractor - he is making the ground sink!) I like his wife and they have five kids so I'll put up with the subsidence. I am very grateful to have someone to do it.

I am grateful I have a good paying job, a warm house, more clothes than I need (really. And I was addicted to buying bed sheets for a while so I could pretty much do a small hotel.)

I am grateful for the furbies. Okay, so the Stinker escaped and scared the shit out of me and the rush hour nutjobs who cut through my neighborhood but she realized her mistake and came back without taking her usual adventure. And Dash is seriously thinking about using the ramp the rent-a-Belgian built him (he is so vain! but I think he finally realized that I can no longer lift him into the house. Man, him and me and Arthur!) The cats are still snuggling nose to belly and still want me to hug them and brush them and hand feed them little cookies. Nothing like hearing four creatures snoring to make you feel safe and snug.

I am grateful my mother is still fretting about weird shit and complaining of the same old health issues that have been the staple of her conversation for the last thirty years. If they are STILL bugging her, can't be that bad.

I am grateful that my sister loves me. Hey, it isn't a given. We had the same parents but at different ages so we had different childhoods and we were decidedly different personalities with diametrically opposed tastes. As kids, those differences divided us but we are blessed - we grew up and learned we could love each other without liking everything the other did. She is a good woman.

I am grateful I won't die a virgin (hey, I'm an unmarried person raised Irish Catholic - it coulda happened!)

I am grateful I live in this country. Despite her flaws, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Big, bawdy, beautiful, tawdry, tacky, gallant - it's a Grand Old Flag.

Speaking of which: my mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you and I thank you. George M. Cohan.

I'm grateful for my family, for the roof over my head and the food that fills my belly. I'm grateful for friends who care enough to try and understand me. I'm grateful that there are still men in the world who turn my head and make me tingle. I'm grateful to be alive and well and taking no prisoners for another Thanksgiving. I'm grateful for many of you and for this place we consider a home away from home.
