1967 Ice Bowl

I have heard that most everyone claims to have seen the infamous 1967 NFL Championship live between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys, even people born after the game was played! LOL!

I am one who did actually watch it on TV and I'll never forget the last play of the game when Bart Starr pulled his quarterback sneak in the remaining seconds for the win.

Who actually watched the game live as it was played? On TV or were you one of the super lucky ones to have been at Lambeau Field that freezing day?
I was 12 years old, living in Minneapolis, born in Green Bay to Green Bay-born parents -- I'm sure it was on (unless blacked out), but I don't remember. I know I wasn't at Lambeau!

Had been to several games that year. Couldn't get tickets for that game. Watched it on TV with lots of friends. Remember the fans tearing down the goalposts. Remember the city that night downtown. No we did not start fires, smash windows, turn over cars - just hooted and hollared a lot and drink massive quanities of fermented malt beverages. Tough to go to school to teach that Monday. Oh, well most of my students had hangovers too (remember drinking at all ages was socially accepted and expected in those days).

Ok, everyone knows the history...Bart Starr(from Alabama by the way) behind Jerry Kramer and Kenny Bowman, at the one. No hand off, Starr thought that it was not a good idea to try to make a hand off in the cold and went into the end zone with Chuck Mercein following, with raised arms...in a sign that he was not helping Starr into the end zone...then the kick off and game over...

No, I only watched it on TV like the hundreds of thousand that remember the game as if they were there. And I was, a week earlier, in County Stadium for the playoff game with the Los Angles Rams.

Our seats were in the end zone, on the third base side, in the second level and had been for years, even before the ""green and gold". It was cold, very cold and even with the sun out, it was still cold. It was soo cold, that my father had gotten tickets given to him for the next game in Green Bay with the Cowboys by the owner of our seats. And we were going, my father and I, except, the weather reports were awful and after being at the game in County Stadium where it was soo cold my father decided that we would just watch it on TV and put the tickets on top of the set, which was what happened.

And no, I don't regret it...I was sick after being at the game in Milwaukee and I had no wish to do it again, even if my father wanted to.

The regret...?...my mother threw away the tickets.

I watched it at my late uncle's house on the north side of Milwaukee. It was one of those life moments I remember. I'll always remember where I was when I heard Kennedy was shot, where I was when I heard the WTC was hit by a plane, and where I was during the ice bowl. I was amused at exedir's comment about Mercein raising his arms so as not to give an impression he was pushing Starr. Just the other day, I mentioned to my son that they must have changed that rule over the years because I see that all the time now. Years ago you could not aid a runner like that. Last Sunday I don't think Rogers would have made that first down without the push he got.
