To HEAT or Not To HEAT, that is the question!

I have a dilema. Our 20 plus year old, gas fired furnace needs to be repaired to the tune of over $2,000. Last week, we attempted to use it and the pilot igniter just kept clicking and the burner wouldn't light. So, two furnace repairmen later... needs a new firebox and pilot contol panel, they say... $2,000. plus!
Unfortunitely, just 2 1/2 years ago, we replaced our air conditioning system and at the time opted not to go with a heat pump, for a small additional cost, which would now be over $5,000.
Soooo, the wife insists we can get by with space heaters for the few nights we actually need heat! I would say in the years we have been here in Central Florida, we have only actually used the central heat maybe a few times a month at night in Dec., Jan. and Feb., supplimenting with a ceramic electric heater.
I would appreciate some input... do many of you folks just get by with space heaters? Opinions, please.

I remember when we lived in Key West when I was a child and there was no heat or A/C in the house. Just a lot of fans.
I think we get spoiled. Last year, I seemed to use my fireplace more than I did the heat. Although I'm in a 3 story townhouse and when I'd come down in the mornings on those cold days, the 2nd floor would be cold so I'd turn the heat on just to warm it up and turn it off. I couldn't sleep at night with the heat on.
If I were you, I'd see what kind of winter we are going to have before forking out that kind of money. I've been here and freezing and I've been here and it was warm the whole winter. You never know. Try the space heaters for awhile. Get a couple. If you find it to not work and be too cold, then consider investing the money. Like you said, if it is cool, it's only about 3 months out of the year. Good luck!

A 10KW heat strip for your air conditioner is only around $100.00. That's what I use and it's all one needs here in Florida. Any competent A/C installer should be able to do the job in a couple of hours.

I'm thinking if my heater goes..I'll just add clothing :-)
Ron,can you go into more details about this 10kw heat strip. I've had several neighbors opt for the $6000+..not me and one neighbor has been told her furnace is ready to go. I've talked her out of spending the money.

A heat strip, is installed after the A/C interior fan. Generally right in front of it. The thermostat will have five wires, one controls the interior fan relay, one the compressor relay, one the heat strip relay, and two for the low, 24 volt, control voltage power supply.
Unless the A/C unit is some sort of antique, there should be a removable metal plate in the evaporator section(that's the interior fan part) which can be removed and a heat strip slid into place. It all plugs together except for the 240 volt wiring. This should be left to a professional.
Now when heat is called for, the compressor remains off while the interior fan circulates air across the heat coils thus warming your home.
We've an A/C pro here.. Ampmanone, if he's still online, he can probably explain it better than me.

We just have the heat strip on our AC unit, which is new, replaced last summer. It is more than adequate. We also have a mini faux fireplace with a blower that just takes the chill off in the LR if we don't need the heat all over.

Thanks, all for the info. and suggestions. I will follow up on the 10kw heat strip. My A/C unit is a 14 seer Amana, just 3 years old! My electric bills, budgeted are around $110. and my gas is around $35. avg., per month.
I have a small ceramic heater already and just purchased a 360 / surround elec. heater for our most used / largest room. We shall see!

Our Amana is also a 14 SEER and the heat strips works just fine in 1500 sq ft.

Thanks, all... I will discuss the heat strips with an A/C guy, tomorrow! Why didn't he mention that rather than a completely new furnace??? Also, I may try and PM Ampmanone.
