New commer "squeaking by?"

New to this group... I "think" I fit the Squeaking By profile... I'm not sure I want to think about it as "squeaking by". I more like the idea of living a simple life (no charge cards for over 15 years; older model car; bartering for goods and services; recycling clothing, furniture, household goods -- and not junk, either). I love the Stone Soup idea of creating something beautiful from basically very little. I have never been able to work in a 9-5 corporate kind of box. I've always wanted a certain amount of daily freedom (to come and go as I please; say yes or no; spend time with my grandchildren; help my kids in a crisis situation; have coffee with a friend in the middle of the day, etc.) so I've been in business for myself for over 20 years.

I believe in the "just in time" theory of life... That my needs and desires are always met just in time. It has always worked for me. I have my social security retirement (for now...) which is not much, but bits of work come to me in odd ways... Of course, I still do massage, Reiki, and my readings (part time). I also often fill in for temp and odd jobs that someone or other calls me about (receptionist, housesitter, dog walker, helping older friends with housework, driving internationally located people to spiritual retreat centers, etc.)

A lot of my work is "off the books" and I generally love my life. Things might be a bit tight for traveling, and so on, but whenever I need a bit more money, work seems to open up in odd ways. Right now I'm housesitting for pay, and it's like a mini-vacation (big house, nice view, big tv, garage parking, blah blah)

I definitely would love to hear how the rest of you manage your retirement or semi-retirement. For me, I expect to always be working in some way or other. And truthfully, that appeals to me. I always want to add more, so I'm also exploring possibilities for volunteering my time... somewhere/somehow.

Welcome, Gitana!

For hubby and I, we are experiencing a real tightening of finances. We are self employed, and work has dropped off--fewer people saying yes to the services we provide. It is tough, but at least we set our own schedule. We just need more people to say yes!

I am consulting and have been out of the corporate mainstream since 2002 - helped someone who needed me and now, things are still a changin' but I agree. I could always find some way to get money when I needed some. I think that we all are choosing how to spend what money we have...I am squeaking by...but not unhappy.

I don't really feel like I "squeak by" either. My income is less than when I worked but I tweaked my budget before I retired and cut out all of the unneccessary spending that we were doing. Ie we were spending $140 in phone bills. Two in house lines and a cell phone. I cut one of the in house lines and changed my cell phone contract and cut that expense in half. The next thing that I looked at was our cable bill and found another source of savings. I went on budget billing with my utility services so that I could project monthly expenses. Our gym has a program for seniors and I cut that expense in half by agreeing to use it only between the hours of 11 & 4. Honestly, I don't feel like my lifestyle has changed that much. It helps thatI live in a college town. The college offers free classes to people over 60 and there is always a concert, a gallery showing etc that is free. We go to museums etc. on free days (most museums have them once a month) and we take advantage of senior rates at the movies. In terms of travel, when we find a deal, we take it. We took advantage of the Southwest Airlines sale and are going to Phoenix in January. We've taken cruises to Mexico, trips to Vegas and all sorts of things this way. There are ways to make it work without significantly impacting your lifestyle, you just have ot be creative. I love HippyGirl's comment. We are all choosing how to spend the money that we have. My income is so much less than when I worked but I;ve never felt so free and so happy.
