Mother Earth

We tend to think of Earth as a very hospitable planet that is extremely supportive of life and especially of human life . A study of geology informs us that such has absolutely not been the case over much of its history .
view link We refer to this period as the last ice age , but scientifically , it is known as the " last glacial period " because we are still in a warmer period of the last ice age . A re-occurence of this degree of glaciation would probably be more destructive to humanity than 10 World Wars .

We think of Earth as hospitable when we compare it to other planets, like Mars, Saturn or Jupiter. And of course, 'hospitable' is relative. Hospitable to what? Bacterial life? Rocks? Human life? Little green alien life? Algae?

The range of worlds hospitable to microbes is vast, especially if you include poly extremophiles. At the same time, we will find many worlds more hospitable to life than Earth. Then, of course, there is the reality that the sentient life that evolves on another planet may find Earth unsuitable for their taste. It might even be deadly.

For a sentient species convinced of its own brilliance, we really don't know very much. Yet.
