Conservative Democrat = Liberal Republican
Another contradiction in terms?
I would call it me....fiscally conservative, liberal most everywhere else...I think..;)
100% of the Democrats I know are fiscally conservative. We don't want to spend more than we make. We just feel that books are better than bombs.
Unfortunately, most of those that call themselves "conservative democrats" or "Blue Dogs" are trying to conserve the money they get from Wall Street, Big Pharma, and the insurance lobby!
These days conservative democrats also have conservative views on the social issues of the day. Approve of restrictions on abortion, including denial of funding for abortion if federal $$ are to be used in all but danger to the live of the mother. Oppose gay marriage, may or may not oppose civil unions, oppose increased funding for homelessness and/or other poverty programs, support allowing religion (Christian) to be taught and religious principals to be considered by religious organizations, getting federal $$. They look pretty Republican on these issues. Differ on union related issues and probably less willing to throw good money after bad on anything the military dreams up.
Other characteristics that anyone can add?
Erm....Aaaaaaa I think there is a difference between conservative, and fiscally conservative. I'm a liberal, and I don't believe we should spend money we don't have. However I believe everyone should enjoy the same rights as everyone else. I believe that governments primary duty is to protect all the people, and not just one class, race, or sexual orientation. And I believe that government should have safety nets that keep people from falling through the cracks.
So how does this differ from conservatism? And how do Conservative Democrats differ from Liberal Democrats?
So again my question is, what is a conservative Democrat?
I feel that Conserva-Dem is a media tag. These holdouts all want something special for their respective states.
Mary L. Landrieu (D-Louisianna) is one hack who is indebted to healthcare special interest and will most likely still vote AGAINST the bill regardless of her vote on cloture. She was able to extort $100M in federal aid for low income people in LA in exchange for her yes vote. No word yet on what Blanche Lincoln (D-Nebraska) and Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska) may have gotten in exchange for their votes.Blanche Lincoln has vowed to vote NO on the final bill if it contains any kind of a public option.
Horse trading is part of the political process. It is neither corrupt or scandalous. Like it or not, that is how legislation is passed. It is the ugly, sausage making side of politics.
I agree with PhilShayne . "They look pretty Republican".....
Interesting Team, Ben Nelson has said he will vote No unless there is a strong Public Option.
